Great! It is indeed interesting to note the subtle (or not-so-subtle) differences between the different issues.
Strange how it's written Europe in the Irish and the Belgian ones
On quite a few coins from Ireland, the Irish language (Gaeilge) is used. And maybe there was an extra reason why Irish was used for the 2007 issue - this year Irish became an official EU language. (Have a look at http://www.europa.eu/index_ga.htm.) The Belgian way of writing Europe nicely covers the three languages: Europa in Dutch (and German), Europe in French.
Strange the Luxemburg one with "that thing " , I can't describe , that can be the Granduke profile and the floor design
That is called a latent image. As far as I know, it was first used on Spanish coins, in the early/mid 1990s, as an anti-counterfeiting measure. Some Russian and Japanese coins have it too. In this case, the latent image was used to comply with both the local law (the Grand Duke has to be depicted on every coin) and the common design ...

It is sure that all the 15 countries in 2009 will mint a 2 € commemorative coin for the 10th anniversary of the Image

An announcement was made on 12 November 2007 by Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker at a press conference.

Well, that first image (with the English language text and the Issuing Country inscription) is the generic "model" only that Mr Almunia and Mr Juncker presented to the media long before the actual coins were issued. The total mintage of about 87 million is simply what you get when you add the single actual mintage figures (listed in the lines below) ...

Would I sound pedantic were I to point that the coin does not incorporate the Greek names for Europe and the euro?

Please keep in mind that this "globe" design is one of several ideas that Geert from muntslag.eu suggested elsewhere. Nothing official, not even semi-official. This one I did (and do) not really like because it does not address, neither by the design nor by the text, what this coin is all about. Other designs that he made do have the € symbol for example ...

BCE wrote:Dear Studio Doria,

Your question was forwarded to the European Commission, since it is not the ECB, but Member States that are responsible for the issuance of euro coins and in this context the Commission has a co-ordinating role.

Yes, all euro-area countries will issue a commemorative 2-euro coin with a common design at the beginning of 2009 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the launch of EMU and of the introduction of the euro. The design will be chosen by EU citizens and residents by voting on the specific web site set up for this purpose. Voting will start on 31 January and finish on 22 February 2008.

Further information will be posted on the European Commission's website within the next few days at the following address:

Finally, I personally think the design you present at

is a very nice one, but we cannot take it into account for our competition, since only EU Mints have been invited to supply designs.
