BTW, speaking of the bad quality of beer in Finland..
A few weeks ago I was in a bar in downtown Helsinki. I had a short conversation with the bartender:
Me: "Hello, do you sell any good beer here?"
Bartender: "No."
Me: "Oh."
Well, at least they were honest.

So, I didn't drink anything that night, just watched my friends drinking Lapin Kusta.

Lapin Kulta is the best one. Delicious taste and full beer.

Since I have to visit Helsinki in a couple of weeks: is there a Finnish beer I have to taste because it's really nice? Or do we have to visit our Belgium friends first before traveling to Finland?

I'm pretty sure there are also good Finnish beers. The biggest breweries all do the same shit, but there are some smaller ones that probably know better how beer brewing works :)
However, finding those smaller ones at least from a shop might be hard. And honestly, I have never tried them, because I simply don't trust the Finnish beer brewing culture enough. It seems that over here some people actually like the way beer tastes here. I bet its because they've never tried anything better, but nevertheless the breweries seem to have being as close to the traditional Finnish pee as possible as their primary goal.

The big breweries make also good beers, but they cost 1,80-2,80€/0,5l and since foreign beers cost the same and are better, there's not much point buying them. Naturally your mileage may vary.

Anyway, as long as you avoid these (the first one is the most important to avoid, the last one the least important), you should be well enough off:


If you don't want to drink your beer the traditional Finnish way (buy a plastic bag full of beer, go to a park, get drunk) and buy your beer in bottles, you might want to try brewery restaurant Teerenpeli in downtown Helsinki. I've got no idea what their beer tastes like, but I've always liked the idea of brewery restaurants :)

Oh, and my favourite place: Beerhouse Poirotti, a small Belgian oriented place with 50 different beers and a talking bartender :)

Little off-topic, but I didn't find better place so...

Last friday i bought my first cobbler shaker:

and made Blue Devil-drinks with it:
Gin 40ml
Blue Curacao 20ml
lemon juice 20ml

well, I found out same evening that it's important to remember to put cap on before shaking. Only place where wasn't Blue Curacao was ceiling.

After that great EBTM05 in Helsinki and after having "tried" my way through the Finnish world of beers, I must admit that from "beer-side", Belgium is deeper in my mind. But yet I had no beer in Finland which I would like to refer to as bad - only expensive...

For all of you beer lovers out there, you should join EBCU (European Beer Consumers Union), which defends the rights of small breweries under pressure from all the big international brewers (such as Budvar Budweiser versus Anheuser Busch Budweiser - which would you prefer???). There are member groups in most European countries, such as CamRA, the Campaign for Real Ale in the UK and Association pour l'Union des Biérophiles in France.

There is a Finnish group too, called Olutliito...

For as far as it has any value, again a Belgian beer, Westmalle Trippel, was elected as best beer in the world by an American beer magazine. And all this, just after the fuss about Westvleteren...
Now, Westmalle is a good beer, although I prefer the dark variant.

My no 1 beer is of course the dutch Grolsch, it's perfect
My no 1 beer from belgium is jupiler. It's a very nice beer.
