Terrible news in Finland

Post by lazza »

Just wanted to let all our Finnish friends know that my thoughts are with you and your compatriates at this terrible time. :(

I really hope nobody is directly affected by the dreadful shootings in Tuusula. What is the world coming too, when surely one of the world's more peaceful nations is affected like this?

Yep, at least I've quite shocked about this stuff.

Not the first and probably also not the last time something like this happens, though. Five years and one month before this, a young man exloded a bomb in a shopping centre in Vantaa, killing seven. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myyrmanni_bombing for more information on that.

In the 1980s there was also a school shooting in Finland. And, thinking of people killing others in a very visible way, there was also the car bomb incident in downtown Helsinki a couple of years ago, though the point in that was only to kill the driver of the exploded car. And nobody but the meant victim died.

However, what's important in all these is that the bombings/killings is that none of them have been done by any organisation or network. I wouldn't claim that Finland's become any more dangerous than it's been in the past. Considering how there's less and less money every year for schools and how the 8-year-olds study in groups of 30 kids, I don't think it's that much of a surprise that the ever increasing stress everyone's felt for the past ten to fifteen years explodes every now and then. There simply are too many left alone. Over here people have a strong trust for the traditionally strong social safety net supplied by the state. It has quite well surpassed the importance of families. Now that the safety net has been largely disassembled but everyone still trusts in it, things happen.

One thing that is quite relieving in that most recent incident is that the killer quite apparently changed his mind. He had walked in to a room, just asking people to cause some caos by throwing around some shelves and then walked away, while he could easily have killed the whole class at the place. He also walked past many people without killing them, which makes me think he wasn't quite as cold-blooded as he might have first thought himself. Of the seven people killed in the huge school, six died in one spot. Had he had similar "efficiency" also in the other parts of the school, he could have easily killed at least 50, maybe even 100 students. Considering that he had packed his backpack with 400 bullets, it is very interesting that he only killed so little people and then shot himself in the head in a toilet. Since almost everyone were still in their classrooms hours after the incident had begun and the classrooms' doors were apparently made of glass, it would have been ridiculously easy killing everyone classroom by classroom. But that never happened.
First I thought that the headmaster's death had been completely in vain, when she had first managed to escape but then returned to the killer, apparently trying to convince him to stop.
That might have been an important reason why so many were allowed to keep on living. If that's the case, she saved tens of young lives by letting herself die.

It seems that he first killed one boy in the upstairs of the school, then tried setting the house on fire and went and shot the headmaster at the backyard. Then he had apparently walked back inside and shot one OR five people (the newspapers I've read aren't very unambiguous about when the other four died). After a while he had returned and killed the school worker who had come to help one who was alive but badly injured. And then he either killed the last four or just stopped killing. Apparently quite quickly after he had been spotted and contacted by police (to which he had answered by shooting one bullet towards them), he had gone to toilet and shot himself.
Apparently the failed burning of the school and the cruel assassination of the headmaster who was trying to show humanity had cast some doubt in his mind. And when he had killed a bunch of more people, he figured out that there actually is more in life than he had thought. When the policemen were there, he must have thought that he doesn't want to kill any more, but didn't feel much like spending the next damn how many years in prison. And blam. Most of the bullets remained in his backpack.

If I am right about what's happened in his head, it shows very clearly that this was something a very badly disturbed kid did when he felt bad but had nobody to talk deeply with for the last ten years or so. The most disturbing thing in this is that actually so many people saw it coming years ago.
