EBT 2010 - The end of growth?

Post by cc6569 »

For almost four years now I am a EuroBillTracker. When having a look at statistics and the number of bills entered I have always seen growth. Until this year. The number of bills entered per month is in stagnation for about half a year now and extrapolating the overall number of bills entered in 2010 results in a decrease for 2010 as compared to 2009. So I am - not much - but a little bit worried on the future of EBT... 8O :?

What is your impression / opinion / explanation on that?

Well, I agree that the activity is going downhill, but we are still above the avarege of the year 2008. I don't think we need to worry,
It is just like the economy, there are ups and downs, altough this is the first down, there will definitly be an Up again.

Indeed. Moreover: do you think we can "grow forever"?

Why not Jes,with the millions of bills produced every year and the 400+ millions citizens of the UE the amount of bills introduced on EBT is only a small drop in the ocean. There's plenty of room to grow and grow we need to spread the word about EBT every day of the week (local newspaper/radio with friends/family etc). And the EU citizens in general needs to give the Euro notes more respect and not treat them like garbage. I see the Americans and the "love/respect" they have towards the US Dollar, in the early 90's it was a normal thing to have in your hands bills from the 70's and early 80's (1 and 5 Dollar Bills). With the Euro when (if) you find a Euro note with more than 8 years you thow fireworks and made a parade on Main Street!

imho it's only because FED has less quality controls on its banknotes.
I've been there 3 times and smaller denomination banknotes normally appear as waste paper.
BCE requires more quality controls so Central Banks used to remove from circulation those notes that don't respect them.
As a matter of facts it's really hard to find wrinkled notes art notes with something written above.

With regards to the quality of bills, I agree completely with ravestorm. The ECB has very strict instructions on the quality of notes. A number written on the note is enough to destroy the note... and destruction is done by machines as soon as they realise that something has been written on it.

With regards to EBT, we about 50,000 notes each month more when compared to last year, when taking into consideration the notes that our 'old' fakers do not insert anymore, the increase appears to be smaller than it really is.

Anyway, what worries me a bit is the lesser amounts of new members.

Maybe we can use the event of the introduction of the euro in estonia for spreading the word a bit. There should be plenty of articles on the internet about that - we should add a link in any discussion threads in these articles, because anyone discussing there should be interested in the euro in general :D

And, on a broader level, we could also use the soon-to-come new design of the euro notes to bring attention to all this note tracking stuff. According to the Monthly bulletin: 10th anniversary of the euro (part 9.5) (PDF):
The first denomination in the second series is planned to be put into circulation on 1 January 2011, and will be followed by the other denominations over a period of several years.
