Thinking in Euros yet?

Post by matt.berlin »

Well, I'm not .. but then given I'm not living in the Eurozone ... it's not that great a crime now, is it?

Not sure if I think in Euros, but I'm also not thinking in DEM, I just see that everything's very cheap and so I buy and buy and buy...

Am Ende des Geldes ist immer noch soviel Monat da is what we say in German!

 I thought people were saying there was more month left at the end of the money! And I just thought the "Der Euro ist ein Teuro" headlines were funny. Maybe you should have had a 5-month price freeze like the French.

Had they? Good idea, should be recommended to counties who will join euroland in the future! There's a lot of argumenting going on in Germany about whether prices increased or not. Some shops really go bankrupt partly because people are buying less.

I think it was also not allowed in Belgium to raise your prices around New Year, due to the Euro-introduction. But the general feeling is that prices have risen due to the Euro..

I'm converting still a lot to BEF, and if you see Belgian ministers on television, a lot of them are still talking in "billions of BEF"..

What sralfalo posted earlier is also one of my feelings: everything looks cheap, I lost a bit the value of money looking at the Euro-prices. Guess it needs some time to adapt to it..

I remember in France at Easter when they were talking about sums in newspaper reports they'd always talk about Francs ... even if amount in Euro was more sensible (for example €100) and add the Euro in brackets afterwards! But then again, I was far from surprised ... when people were still talking in "ancien franc". Strange country. I just hope people aren't talking in FF in 50 years time!

I'm doing my best to think in euro, and I'm also trying to convince other people to do the same!
In Italy newspapers almost always use euros, always adding a further explanation saying "about XXXX liras". I convert just to be sure :)

I'm trying to do the same thing here, but not too many people are convinced! I have decided that I'll give people Euros for birthday presents. I think I'll give €10 per person per b'day. I suppose, €15 if I am feeling generous.

Well I try to limit converting back to the Belgian Frank. But I have to admit sometimes when I want to compare with a price I remember in BEF instead of converting the old price to Euro I convert the Euro price to BEF. :(

On the other hand when I go swimming, to keep track of which distance I swim, for every 50 meters I count 50 cent, so every 100 meters I count one Euro. Does that count as thinking in Euro too? :?

One French Franc equals 100 Ancien Franc therefor one Euro equals 100 Ancien Euro. ;)

I think a more interesting gift would be a couple of 1-euro coins from different countries

BTW I'm mostly converting but slowly start thinking in euro.

Well, my mates give each other £5 or £10 .. more often 10. So if I give €10, I am making a saving! It's not as if I am paying this out for everyone in the country (though, it might be a nice thought for the government pro-Euro campaign!)

I gave my one of my friends an Italian 1 Euro coin (among other things) for her birthday, as she has a thing about that design.

Here in Portugal everybody now says that our official currency was escudos but our real currency was contos. One conto is 1000escudos, or 5 euros, and to everything that costs more than 5 euros we allways talked and thinked in contos.. And in tv, politicians etc.. still talk in contos most of the time

Greetzz,
so here the only things that look cheaper are small buyings, coffe, newspaper..., because 1euro cent is 2 escudos, but the rest of the things look a lot more expensive, the good of it is that it also looks that we win more money now! :)
