Isle of Man

Post by Fjon »

Just wondering how do I should enter notes from The Isle of Man?
It is not part of the UK (nor the EU), yet isn't really recgonised as a country by the UN.
I don't particularly want to log it as UK as this wouldn't be really correct, but is there any other option?

Same goes for all Channel Islands - they are also outside the UK and EU.
How are they logged?
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Other users have just used the UK. See for example:

Douglas (IM)
Saint-Helier (Jersey)

I think that Gibraltar is like the Channel Islands....

and EBT says 'is a city in the UK' : http://en.eurobilltracker.com/profile/?city=31487

If Gibraltar is a city in the UK, it seems that the Isle of Man is an island in the UK. (for EBTracking...)

And, along the lines of it, Tahiti is an Island within france.

There is an excellent diagram of terms about the British Isles on Wikipedia.

Though the overseas possessions are not included, note that the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands are outside the United Kingdom. It is my guess that to include the overseas possession the oval United Kingdom would have to stretch outside of the figure, as they are (by definition) outside the British Isles.

Another note is that both the Crown Dependencies (Man & Channel Islands) and the overseas possessions are not sovereign nations, and EBT only accepts sovereign states* as valid county entries.

*: Taiwan is tricky, as is Kosovo. (See also this list, with its inclusion criteria. Also, there is a list of all dependent territories.)

If this is considered a problem and there's motivation to correct it, how about just switching the words "United Kingdom" to "Great Britain"? Would anything be wrong with this approach?

Well, the United Kingdom consists of Great Britain and Northern Ireland...

you should try living here....!

In fact, I also noticed that other British dependencies are listed under the United Kingdom - I saw some notes recently entered in the Falkland Islands, and also have seen notes in the past entered in the British Virgin Islands. Both have similar status to the Isle of Man, other than obvious geogrpahic distance. Sadly, I did not manage to get any Euros while I was in the BVIs last month

But (on the same trip) I also thought I might have the dilemma, as I was flying there via Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. In the end, I only got Euros in the French half of the island, and this is clearly counted as part of France, so was easy to enter notes under the "overseas department" postcode for France. If I had picked up notes in the Dutch half (which I didn't!), I am not sure how I would have entered them, the Dutch Caribbean seems to be more like the UK (protectorates) rather than like the French (part of France)....?

Sint-Maarten is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. I'm not exactly sure how to compare this situation with France, the UK and their overseas possessions.

I believe it is not. Gilbratar is in the EU while the Channel Islands are not.

there's a huge table in Wikipedia about all the special areas of the EU countries

Opened a can of worms eh?

I logged a note in IoM - looks I'm the first person to log one in the IoM airport using UK as country, so will have to wait for the dot to be generated:

http://en.eurobilltracker.com/notes/?id=95024510" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I was in Gibraltar I also logged notes as UK, so I guess this is the only way to do it.

one way to simplify this horribly complicated situation would be to classify all territories like Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar, la France d’outre-mer, Greendland, the Faroe Islands, and whatever as "dependent territories" of the relevant country (since that is probably the most general term for all the different classifications of dependence and autonomy there are) - with an entry in the highest administrative divisional level for "dependent territories", under which the relevant territories could be grouped (e.g. UK -> dependent territories -> Isle of Man, Denmark -> dependent territories -> Faroe Islands), so we could finally get some meaningful statistics for these areas too...

But Gibraltar does not seem to have a postal code? I expect to get tome euros from the rest of the too many pounds I took out of the ATM before returning to :flag-es: but may hold on to them and spend them in some other country for more interesting potential hits... I will ask to get it all in :note-5: if possible to maximize the number :)

Hmpf, the guy refused to give me just :note-5:s but at least I have now entered two :note-20: and a :note-5: in Gibraltar. Maybe good that I was just short of having enough for a :note-50:. There was a Spanish woman ahead of me who exchanged over 1000 pounds and got a think pile of :note-50:. There will be another :note-5: when I hand back the power adapter plug I borrowed at the hotel, I just hope it's not the same as I paid in deposit.

Shops and restaurants all accept euros but the rate is lousy so it would have been an expensive way to get notes.
