Questions that have been answered by the National Bank Guide

Post by Mr Euro »

1. Are serialnumbers being reused after the bill is destroyed?
No, there is no need for that. The serialnumbersystem has a enough serialnumbers to last for many lifetimes!
2. Are bills being checked manually by banks or ECB
Only ECB and the National Banks check the bills. They have machines for that, which can detect the slightest fault in the bills. Bills which are fake, written on (even when it's just a dot!), torn,... will be destroyed. The notes put back into roulation are in useable condition and 100% certain not fake.
3. Do they automatically remove bills when their lifetime is over? (ie 18 months)?
No, if a bill is still useable it is put back into roulation. No matter what age. It's a fact that 5 eurobills wont last as long as 500 euro bills. People are more carefull with higher value bills.
4. Why do poolingnotes exist and how does it work?
There is no real deal behind poolingnotes. If a national bank doesn't have enough bills of a value, it orders that specific value at ECB. ECB than delivers what's in stock. What's in stock the country gets, no matter what country. When ECB is in need for a specific value it orders a National Bank to print notes. They will order a printer for that. Not all National banks print all notes anymore. that would be to expensive! There is a list of what country prints what notes on the ECB website. There are still many unused bills in stock that have been foreseen for the launch of the eurobill.
5. We have found a note with two different serialnumbers on it. Does NB know of the existance of these?
No, but if you find notes that have printingmistakes keep them. They will raise in value within years. Collectors are keen for those.
6. We have heard some things about chips in notes. What about that?
Never believe rumours. Those are started by people around ECB, not ECB or national banks themselves. If ECB has things planned, you only will hear it when it's really decided. They can keep secrets very well.
7. How can you recognize a fake bill?
All fake bills didn't pass one check and that check is actually evented by the belgians! It only works with 50 and higher values. When you change position of the bill, the color of the value changes color. If it doesn't change color, it's fake.

If you remember any other questions with their answer, please post them here. Afterwards we will move this topic to the english forum.
