german Holstentor: next year on the 2euro-coin

Sorry, my english is very bad

A few minutes ago, i listened to the radio, and there are some interesting news: Next year, the german 2€-coin will have the 'Holstentor' at the place, were now is the german eagle. I think thats a great changing.
I know the Holstentor, its a famous building of Luebeck.

Wow, I didn't think that Germany would start in 2006!

Now many different 2€-coins from Germany will come! Every year, Germany will make a 2€-coin of another "Bundesland". Schleswig-Holstein (Holstentor) will be the first, but the 15 others are about to follow! And if the coin is minted by every Mint - oh my god - then we have got 16*5=80 different 2-€ commerative coins from Germany...

Cool, it's like the U.S. state quarters. Although the German states take a lot longer... They're already more then halfway through with their special 25c coins in the US although the program started in 1999.

But the Americans issue 5 coins per annum => 10 years

In the Euro-zone that wouldn't be possible due to the ECB regulations for the emission of 2-Euro commerative coins.

... an idea that the US "copied" from Canada ;-) But such concepts seem to be popular anyway; Poland also started honoring all voyevodships on coins a few years ago.

Schleswig-Holstein is the first state (Bundesland) in that series because it will chair the states chamber (Bundesrat) at that time. According to well founded rumors :-) the Holstentor coin will be issued on 3 February.

According to the press release from the Federal Ministry of Finance which was the cause of this thread so to say

the Schleswig-Holstein coin should come in February. http://www.bundesfinanzministerium.de/c ... _PM56.html The formal decision is likely to be made at the cabinet meeting on 18 May ...

€2 coins? About 1.5 billion so far (coins dated 2002, 2003 and 2004 combined). But of course recent mintages have been much lower than the initial "output" - about 77 million dated 2004 for example.

According to the recommendations of the Commission and the Council, the maximum mintage of a €2 commem issued in 2006 (and to be followed by another one the next year) should not exceed the higher threshold of these two: either 0.1 percent of all 2 euro coins brought into circulation in Euroland by Jan-2005, or 5 percent of the €2 coins brought into circulation by the issuing member state in the same period of time. (Hope I got that right.)

Now do the maths

or simply wait until the German federal government makes its decision concerning the mintage. In any case, I don't think these state coins will be rare ...

that's over 50 million special coins per year. So they won't be that rare.
