Where are you going on holiday this summer?

Post by lazza »

I wondered whether to put this in a Eurotracker discussion, as it might help people spread their notes about, but decided better of it. (Can I be criticised for putting a nearly-on-topic post in an off-topic forum?!)

So...

Where are you going on holiday this summer?!

I've just booked my ferry from the UK for a mini driving tour of Europe -we'll be arriving in the Netherlands, driving down through Germany (friends in Mannheim and Ludwigsburg) to Austria (friends in Kufstein), and then through northern Italy to Provence! 8)

That should at least double my total bills! :D

EDIT: Change of plan - we arrive in Zeebrugge, travel down to Austria through Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany, then back into Germany and finally down to the south of France!

This thread is slightly late considering the amount of Finns on this forum.
Up here the summer holidays begin in the June, quite often in the beginning of June. They end at latest around the beginning of August.

So, many people - such as me - have already been to their holidays. I was in Estonia with my girlfriend. We had a very nice time down there. We visited Tartu, Viljandi, Pärnu and Tallinn. All of them are very magnificent cities, all in their own way. Tartu is culturally and historically a very important place with a lot of nice areas. It's also where the most important Estonian university is situated.
Viljandi has 400-year-old ruined castle and very lovely nature and atmosphere. It's not a very big city, so it's perfect for a day-trip.
Pärnu is a nice and cheap beach holiday resort, where we just layed on the sand, enjoying the sun and swam.
And Tallinn.. Well, Tallinn is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It has a lot of culture and a very good pancake restaurant (Their pancakes are absolutely huge. And cheap. And they taste just great). One could spend weeks there, always finding new stuff to explore. And, being a Finn, I naturally will end up spending altogether several months of my life in gazillion trips to Tallinn :D

I'll go to France (Normandy) with the scouts where we'll stay two weeks. For the other three weeks of my last summer holidays I have no plans so far...

Just visiting friends and family in Finland (already been in Nurmes for a week last month) and tomorrow we are going to Helsinki for a week. We also go to Estonia, but just for a day. On our way home we stop in Kouvola and Lahti. Hopefully we get to do something nice in august as well

I have heard that all the Baltic states are very beautiful with magnificent cities, great food, wonderful beaches, and friendly people. It's unfortunately very difficult to get there from the UK, although I think some of the low-cost airlines like EasyJet or Ryanair have recently started routes to Riga and Tallinn. One day....

I had my holiday in May already. I spent it in Hungary and Cuba with my wife.

I will have an extra one-week holiday at the end of this month. I have been planning to drive around in Finland with my wife. The preliminary plan is visiting in Northern Karelia and Kainuu. Let's see.

I see that I am not the only one who is going to travel through Europe!

My boyfriend and I will first go to Germany and then to Austria. If we have any time left we will also go to Italy.
So I am certainly going to score a few new countries!!

My holiday will start in two weeks, and first two weeks of it I'm going to spend sailing around Estonian archipelago with my own boat and couple of friends. We will be at least in Hiiumaa, Saaremaa and in Pärnu, that Dakkus already mentioned. 8)

Latter two weeks of my holiday I will spend in a bus full of drunken idiots, going from Tallinn to Budapest via Krakow. In Budapest there is Sziget-festival that lasts a week. And then back same route with the same even more drunken idiots. Absolutely great fun. I will be arriving back to Helsinki same weekend when there is EBT-meeting there. I will attend, if I'm fit enough after that trip.

Well.. If you're going to visit Tallinn, you can do it also via Helsinki, from where it's about 3 hours and 20€ to Tallinn ;)

And if you don't think of the trip solely as a trip to the Baltic states, but also as a trip to Scandinavia, you can first take a ferry from the UK to Norway or Sweden, then take a train to Swedish east coast and then take a ferry to Estonia or Latvia.
I know nothing about the companies that sail those lines, but if you someday find that really interesting, just contact the Swedish tourist info and they'll probably know everything about that stuff. I'd guess. And then you can naturally come back via Finland and a plane or through Poland, Germany and France.
You should also note that the buses between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are very cheap. The site of probably the most expensive bus company driving those lines can be found here.

Thanks Dakkus.... sounds like a plan for summer 2006

From Newcastle in the north of England, it's very easy to get a ferry directly from there over to Norway and Sweden. The Fjordline route to Bergen and Stavanger is especially nice (as long as the sea is calm... ) as it passes along some very picturesque fjords! Now I just need to extend my next trip by a few weeks...

There is a small chance I go to Ireland, otherwise it'll probably be the other side of the Netherlands ("Friesland")

And there's a 80% I go to Helsinki (EBT-Meeting)
