The Finish Ministry of Finance has decided that the two euro commemorative coin for 2005 will be minted in honour the United Nation’s 60th birthday and Finland’s 50 years of membership in the UN. An issue of 1 500 000 pieces will be published in the midst of October.

A public design competition arranged by the Collector Coin Committee for the design of the two euro commemorative coin “Finland member of the UN for 50 years” was won by designer Tapio Kettunen’s proposal “Pala palalta” (Bit by bit). The winning piece visualises UN’s role as international peace building organisation and support for the development of nations. These dimensions in UN’s task are important for Finland.

Two-euro UN commemorative coin

A two-euro UN commemorative coin will be issued in Finland on 24 October 2005. The issue commemorates the 60th anniversary of the UN and the 50th anniversary of Finland?s membership in the UN.

Two million of the commemorative coins will be struck. The Bank of Finland will issue 800,000 coins through normal currency supply channels and about one million coins through Finnish commercial banks as wholesale deliveries.

The UN commemorative coins are on sale for private persons at nominal price at the Bank of Finland customer service office and Rahapaja Moneta Shop, 24-28 October 2005. The Bank's customer service office (Rauhankatu 19, Helsinki) will sell one coin per customer and the Moneta Shop (Unioninkatu 32, Helsinki) will sell a maximum of one roll, ie 25 coins, per customer.

One 2€ roll contains 25 coins, and therefore costs 50€. If you get a Finnish roll now, it almost certainly includes several of those special coins.

I got one as change from a grocery shop two weeks ago. Other than that, I haven't seen them anymore.
