I totally agree with HausGeist; I believe it's better to have €1 and €2 only in coin form. Here in Greece a sizeable majority (at least!) would prefer to have these two denominations in banknote form, though.
I also enter notes at www.wheresgeorge.com, whenever I am in the United States or acquire dollars, that is. A new $1 coin was introduced around 2000 and it seems it has become more popular than the older one, introduced in 1979, the minting of which ceased shortly afterwards.
A new series of $1 coins will be introduced in a couple of years, featuring all Presidents of the United States (following the success of the "state quarters", i.e. the 25-cent coins commemorating the 50 states comprising the U.S.A.). Yet, I would not like to see the $1 banknote totally withdrawn (same for the $2 banknote - yes, they do exist!

I think it won't take a long time, because we are only almost 5 years busy and growing faster then "George" (about two times faster)?:
In four months George grew from $473 615 512 towards $508 161 018 (=+34 545 506)
Eurobilltracker from €372 559 420 towards €443 881 135 (=+71 312 715)
With the same speed we would be equal at €$568 541 931 in about 188,7694956 days (=around 30-3-2007 18:28 )
But because Euro's smallest note is a
, this amount will be $€568 541 935.
Of course this is VERY theoretical and the growth won't be lineair but it gives a hint on what time this would happen. I even think it would be much sooner, because we are growing faster each time (maybe even in January/February).
