Question about EuroTracking

Post by Guest »

Hello!

I'm an American and a user of WheresGeorge.com. As I'm going to be in Paris December 2006-January 2007 I've ordered some Euros and look forward to using the Eurotracker. However, I'm uncertain about European protocol: in America we write or stamp the web address on the bills. Is this also the European procedure? If so, is there a preferred place to write the address?

Thanks very much!

This question is so popular, it even made it to the help system :-)

http://www.eurobilltracker.eu/faq/index ... 3;mark=1#1

Essentially, it's your choice - mark your bills to increase the chance for a hit later (at the cost of the notes lifespan) or don't and just see what happens. The chances for a hit in the Eurozone aren't THAT astronomical any more, even without marked notes ;-)

On the EBT site FAQ part You can read the next
Is it legal to mark notes as recommended by Where's George for dollar notes?
Yes, it is apparently not illegal. One of our users received an email from the ECB which states that.

If you choose to mark them, please only write on the white background. There is no reason to deface the notes. Moreover, some banks remove any bills with markings on them from circulation, so you may shorten the lifetime of a note significantly if you mark it. Besides, some cashiers have engaged users in debates about scribblings and occasionally even refused to accept such notes.

I hope this answers your question.

Have a nice trip to Europe

I have a friend that is on ebt and he will go to Paris next Sunday. Maybe he can find one of your notes and you can find one of his or even one of mine because he will take some of my notes :D

marking

Post by GideonB »

This may be a dead horse but I'm curious as to how prevalent marking euros is. I've been georging for over 4 years and always stamp my bills. Are there stamps that are commonly used on euros?

Hi GideonB,

It's great having you around. Please feel welcome on this forum.

Your question is fair and it seems that there is really a different perception between USA and EU on this topic.

I tried to mark some of my bills and strangely, people really reacted adversely to a bill bearing a stamp or any mark.

I had a stamp built for this purpose stating "Where was this bill? where will it go? www.eurobilltracker.com" ; these three sentences were put into a nice circle, but :
1. I never got a hit out these bills
2. people really were suspicious when I handed out the bills (I regularly bring back notes to the bank in packs of 100 :note-10: )
3. Marked bills tends to be destroyed by banks

It seems that here, people really believe that Money must be clean ; not only it shouldn't be "white-washed" (from the Mob, I mean), but it should be stainless or whatever imperfections.

I hope I helped..

My opinion is that writing/stamping the URL on a note, doesn't help at all. It just makes the lifespan of the note shorter.
Living away from Euro zone in the beautiful Vancouver, Canada since January 2012. Experiences and stories of living in here can be found in here (in Finnish).

In Europe, the bigger banks are always destroying dirty/used notes, or with something written/stamped on it, only a number won't be a problem, but a stamp could be a reason for them to destroy the note. That's why I only write the url on very dirty or used notes (if I don't forget to do it ;))

I'm not in favour of stamping notes in general but if a note is extremely used and damaged, sometimes, I stamp it.
I had never calculated the ratio of my stamped notes so I just did using NIG. Guess: from the 139 notes I stamped, 10 of them became a hit 8O :) ... quite a nice hitratio of 14. My overall hitratio is 168.
So, it looks like -in Belgium- stamping notes helps to get a hit.

What's important is whether a lot of these hit partners began their EBT career by entering the stamped bill. Otherwise it's probably just coincidence.

To make this point crystal clear..
If the note would be destroyed anyway, it doesn't hurt stamping it.

I would like to second the oppinion of bhoeyb, fons and Dakkus and add that it is not a good idea to bring such notes directly to a bank. Spend it somewhere and you might be lucky and get something like this. (The only note that was entered again out of 17 or so which I marked so far...)

Yeah, in wheresgeorge.com were asked not to bring ANY amount of stamped bills to the bank upon punishment of loosing our account, so that I would never do. Its interesting to note the differences here, with US dollars everything is stamped, but I guess I wont be doing that when I head overseas. How many of your bills actually turn up again? It doesnt seem like that many of them would.
Gideon
