I have somewhere heard/read that for
it's something like one year and for
even ten years.
Living away from Euro zone in the beautiful Vancouver, Canada since January 2012. Experiences and stories of living in here can be found in here (in Finnish).

I think that the avarage lifetime varies depending of € country. I have also found that over here in Spain the notes which I have withdrawn from cahspoint are quite old.
My vision of the notes in Finland side is that they are withdrawn from use easier. I could be wrong in that because I am in Flinland only during couple days per year.
Also when I saw how the notes are treated in Ireland will influence for avarage lifetime in negative manner. The Irish people simply will break their notes even they are made of stainless steel !

Here is a Portuguese TV report on old notes: http://videos.sapo.pt/NumWlh01MRid531GLQyV
Only during 2005 the Banco de Portugal destroyed 289 million euro banknotes!!! In the end of the report the journalist shows 20.000 euro turned into garbage...
