I have a question from the 2000 Eurovision Songfestival. It's about a finnish band, Nightwish. I saw a video from that band but I think it was from the finish selection. They didn't go to the final?

In Finland there was for a long time a committee that chose the band to be sent to the Eurovision. The committee hated popular music and had its own, very peculiar, taste of music. That's also why Finland has always been either the last or 2nd last in the Eurovision :D

I don't remember whether that committee just decided Nightwish was against their agenda or if it was one of the first times the Finns got to chose the band theirselves and still thought Eurovision was a nice joke. Because joke is what the majority of Finns have always considered the contest. Not because of the contest itself, but the ridiculously bad artists sent there everywhere. Some ten years ago it was a common joke that instead of saying "when hell freezes over" they said "when we win the Eurovision". And no one ever found out why the music everyone listened to was always disqualified :D

Anyway, Nightwish wasn't humoristic enough.

did you know, since 1994 Italy doesn't take part in the contest because no-one wants to see it in Italy. But 1997 they forgot to opt-out so they had to take part

Thanks for the reply Dakkus. I also think eurovision became a joke over the years. I was amazed how a band like Nightwish appeared in eurovision. Anyway, Finland have great bands, great voices and musicians, you don't need eurovision

I was really surprised when I've found out that Nightwish had taken part of the Finnish song contest for Eurovision. Surprised for 2 reasons, first because they were part of it, their music is not the kind of music you expect from these contests. Second because they didn't won 8O I believe they were second, too bad, maybe Finland could have won it finally if Nightwish were their representants.

I wonder if Moonspell ever considered to take a chance in the Portuguese contest

Didn't Lordi go to the Eurovision for Finland? 8O

But however I don't like the songfestival really much, maybe nice when you're zapping and you see that. More not. And for Holland we have again a 'not very good artist'', called Tréble, who used to sing in some language which doesn't even exist. Dont know if they're gonna do that also at the festival but who knows ;) And the stupid thing is, the tv channels have this time chosen the candidates themselve, because they want to have good results this time..They let the public vote between that canditates, though. So that was it :)

I like it

AND

it is totally old-fashioned.

Plus the rules are stupid as there are twenty-something Eastern European countries all voting for each other so a big nation (with a larger population than all the small ones together) like Germany may not even win if they have a good song like in 2004. :(

But this year our participant sucks anyway, so I don't mind someone else winning

Can anyone explain me why Germany participates this year? We were last in 2005 and I thought the last one is always excluded from participation next year?
