Re: Summer-EBTM09: Who will stay where and how long?
There are at least four campsites in Vienna. All of them are, not really surprising, outside the citycentre. They all got access to public transport. Without really knowing them I tried to compare the locations. I can’t really say anything about the campsites itself, 3 out of the 4 got the same owner so I guess that they have about the same comfort and price level.
Campsites of the Verkehrsbüro:
Camping Neue Donau:
to the city center (Stephansplatz) > 20 minutes
to the Airport >45 minutes
to Westbahnhof (train station serving train to and from western Europe, next to one of Vienna main shopping streets) >30 minutes
access by bus, last bus arriving at 23:10, 1 line every 30 minutes during the day (going to U1 Kaisermühlen)
access by S-Bahn, last train arricing at 23:29, every 30 minutes during the day
+ located next to the Neue Donau, good for swimming/water sports
- located next to a highway intersection, might be noisy
Camping Wien West:
to the city center (Stephansplatz) >35 minutes
to the Airport about 70 minutes
to Westbahnhof >20 minutes
access by bus, last bus arriving at, 1 line every 30 minutes, 1 line every 60 minutes during the day, last bus arriving at 00:10 (going to U4 Hütteldorf)
+ located in the Vienna Woods, good for hiking and similar activities
Camping Wien Süd:
to the city center (Stephansplatz) >35 minutes
to the Airport about 60 minutes
to Westbahnhof >25 minutes
access by bus (frequently, some lines nearby), walking to the underground possible (U6 Alterlaa), nightbus access
+ closer to infrastructure that the other campsites, there should be some shops, restaurants and even banks in walking distance.
other campsites
Camping Wien Süd Rodaun (no webpage?)
to the city center (Stephansplatz) >45 minutes
to the Airport about 60 minutes
to Westbahnhof about 70 minutes
one bus line every 10 to 15 minutes (to S-Bahn Liesing or to U6 Alterlaa (28 minutes bus ride and Alterlaa is still not even close to the city center!)
+ seems to be a quiet residential area, some shops and restaurants might be nearby
- In the middle of nowhere (if you want to spend your time in the city centre)

Re: Summer-EBTM09: Who will stay where and how long?
Thank you for the informative summary.
Comparing the possibilities, I prefer the Neue Donau campingside, because of its nearness to the downtown.
(the soundscape won´t be a big problem, even I will be on the meeting the whole time.)
The price is quite ok (9,50 € for campingmobile, 6,50 € car/tent and 7,20 € p.p. / day) and a good, cheap alternative.
As soon as I will have green light from my job and girlfriend I will book there for my campmobile.

infrastructure at this place is really good. there are two supermarkets on the other side of the street, many other shops and banks in walking distance. it takes you 5 minutes by car to the highway. you can reach the U6 (subway) in 15 minutes walking distance, but there's a bus station (62A) in front of the campsite, from where you can reach the "Schnellbahn" (regio-trains) and U6 in about 10 minutes.

At the vending machines of the Wiener Linien (Vienna Transport Authority) as well as the OEBB (Austrian rail company) you can select your prefered language before buying your ticket, languages included are (I am not 100% sure and will check this later) German, English, Italian and French. Using these machines might be the best idea as the people at the ticket counter might not speak the best English and almost for sure no other language.maarsy wrote: also about the transport , are there machines to sell tickets in english or would i be able to save miself in english to a ticket office
Check at http://www.wienerlinien.at/wl/ep/channe ... peId=10220 for the ticket best fitting your needs.
http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp might be useful for traveling to/from Vienna by train.

Re: Summer-EBTM09: Who will stay where and how long?
Today I made reservation on Wien Camping "Neue Donau" from 19.-24. August.
Would be nice if some other participants will be at the campingside.

Der Campingplatz ist etwas südöstlich davon.helloggs wrote:... except that it seems to be in the middle of a highway junction, so I am not sure about the noise factor...As I said, I dunno.

Re: Summer-EBTM09: Who will stay where and how long?
me and ravestorm will stay in the Hotel Capri from 19.08. to 25.8. . The day before we'll stay overnight in Passau, and the night from 25th to 26th we'll stay in Klagenfurt.
Our chosen hotel is quite near to the city center, internet, parking lot available, breakfast - and if you ask for an offer, the prices are luckily not as shocking as they are on their price list
