This is my first post and I'm fairly new on EBT.
I studied and made my BSc in Maribor. It's a lovely place, with a lot of history - especially the old town center. Because it's an university town, there are a lot of restaurants, pubs and bars and in the winter it'll be really lively. There also isn't much need for taxis or using public transportation, as you can get from almost any point to almost any point within 15 - 20 min by foot. Communicating with the locals shouldn't pose a problem, as it has a big population of university students.
I recommend you look it up on the internet. It's history up to WWII is really interesting. In recent years it has some internal problems, but they don't have much effect on people who are not living or working there, so visitors shouldn't be bothered by it.
P.S. I:
Yes. I am advertising it because of self interest. I live in Ljubljana now, so comming to Maribor wouldn't be a big problem for me.
P.S. II:
Never, NEVER, organize anything in Maribor in Summer. It's empty and pretty darn dull, because all the students are home.
