W-EBTM 2014 - Decide where. Maribor or Lisbon?

This is my first post and I'm fairly new on EBT.
I studied and made my BSc in Maribor. It's a lovely place, with a lot of history - especially the old town center. Because it's an university town, there are a lot of restaurants, pubs and bars and in the winter it'll be really lively. There also isn't much need for taxis or using public transportation, as you can get from almost any point to almost any point within 15 - 20 min by foot. Communicating with the locals shouldn't pose a problem, as it has a big population of university students.
I recommend you look it up on the internet. It's history up to WWII is really interesting. In recent years it has some internal problems, but they don't have much effect on people who are not living or working there, so visitors shouldn't be bothered by it.




P.S. I:
Yes. I am advertising it because of self interest. I live in Ljubljana now, so comming to Maribor wouldn't be a big problem for me.

P.S. II:
Never, NEVER, organize anything in Maribor in Summer. It's empty and pretty darn dull, because all the students are home.

A summer meeting in Maribor, it would be nice. I am sure !
A winter meeting in Lisbon would be nice too.

Both cities are fine for me. Yet I have voted for Lisbon. Reasons:

1. After the winter there is hopefully a higher chance for springtime weather
2. Due to organisational shortcomings in our company my chances to attend a summer meeting are too low. (I only visit EBTMs when I have some extra days, and not just hop-in-the-plane on friday evening and rush-rush back on sunday afternoon.)

Hopefully, in four weeks the date can be fixed, too.

Not that I have anything against Maribor, but to me the choice is quite clear:
First international meeting in Portugal - I´ve been waiting for this for years and years
in March - just think about the spring feeling in southern Europe when we´ve had enough of the winter and snow
in an area which is still one of the hotspots of eurobilltracking
with a organising crew who are active trackers and who have clearly thought and prepared a good, interesting and "different" program for the attendees.

Go, Lisbon, go!

Guys, as a co-organizer, I second lmviterbo, most people are on holidays in the summer and it would be very hard for us to organize a summer event. As far as I remember, we have never held a national meeting in the summer, since a lot of people are on holidays.

For the record, my brother did his Erasmus in Maribor. I had a chance to visit the city then, and I must tell you: you are faced with a very hard choice, 2 great competitors!

Just another note on a prospective Lisbon Summer-EBTM. Nobody knows at the moment if it's possible. I'm striving to get some local help to prepare W-EBTM if Lisbon wins. I have no idea how much easier (or harder, for the matter) it will be to gather organizers for the Summer meeting.

Yeah. That's true, but tis is not the question. Here's about the winter meeting.

Not really.
It is a lot easier to get to Lisbon from most parts of Europe than to Maribor.
And possibly faster.
For instance, in your case, there are daily direct flights Toulouse-Lisbon.
Not the case with regards to Toulouse-Maribor.

I voted Maribor. It would be my first attendance, but as I'm in Italy for a conference in early March, and I like to add a week's holiday to it, Maribor would be the closer option, as I travel mostly by train. I visited Maribor in March last year, and I didn't have to complain about the weather...

Lisbon is equally beautiful, but I probably won't get there in March next year.

It would be very useful if the votes reflected how many people are actually planning to travel to either candidate town if the meeting is taking place there in March 2014.

I'm sure both towns are great to host an EBT Winter Meeting. The real question is not "Which town is better?" nor even "Which candicacy is better?" but "In March 2014, would you be more willing to go to Lisbon or to Maribor?" I sincerely hope that the "loser", be it Lisbon or Maribor, can recandidate next Winter (or maybe next Summer).

So if you don't think you might be able to attend the meeting, wherever it might happen, please refrain from voting (or vote for the option "Any of them" if you really must vote). Even if you are Portuguese or Slovenian, please don't vote just to take sides.

May the town with more participants win now. And may the runner-up team and town recandidate!


EDIT: Unfortunately, if you change your mind, you can't change your vote. I had written about this because I thought this would be possible, but it isn't.
