Anyway; I'll be in Paris this weekend. I'm not sure, whether there will be time for EBT (on a large scale), but I do have some questions:
Are there banks that give if I'm not a customer? (as far as I know French banks, it's highly unlikely, but to have asked it)
How many old are still in circulation?
How likely is it, to get a new without asking for it? (a roughly guessed percentage is enough)
Would it make sense to bring from home and change them into larger notes ( , etc.) in shops, restaurants,.... ?
And the last question concerning dots:
Paris Gare du Nord is, as far as the dot borders are concearned, in another dot than the city centre (with the "typical" sights as Notre Dame, Eiffel-tower etc. in it). If I receive notes at that station, would the notes be merged into the dot the station is in, or would they be merged into the southern, city centre dot as the postcode might refer to that dot?

Hi, here are your answers:
1) You won't get any in French banks. Our banking system is hopeless and it would be a pure waste of time to try to get bills from them. Except if you intend to visit the Eastern suburbs of Paris, there is no way to get anything interesting from a bank.
2) Old ? approximately 10 % or less
3) You can get new in ATM, or in regular change.
4) changing into higher values is feasible, but French people will find it suspicious. You can try at the reception of the hotel, saying that you need a bigger bill for the "present of your French nephew"....
5) You can get 4 dots Paris and the crossing of dot lines is at the Arc de Triomphe. If you fill in the correct post code you will have the correct dot. In Paris post codes are individualized for each "Arrondissement" (=Bezirk) ; You will therefore fill in a post code between 75001 and 75020 as there are 20 arrondissements. please note arrondissement XVI has two psotcodes 7516 and 75116. You find the post codes on the tickets when buying things or on the street names you have the arrondissement with there numbers, therefore their post codes.

4) As I'm visiting a friend (and having a possibility to sleep there), I won't get the chance to change at a reception. And at my age, I don't have a nephew either....

5) I was asking, as for instance, Antwerp is divided in two dots (~the river Schelde is the border) but there are several streets located in the left dot but belonging to the right bank dot due to their postcode.
And therefore, I thought that it might be an easy option to get the northeastern dot by buying something at Gare due Nord. But if the station is located in a postcode area belonging to the dot below it (as the dot-border isn't far away) I wouldn't necessarily have to buy something over there.

The postal code for Gare du Nord is 75010,it's where I got most of my Paris notes, too. I would guess its in the southeastern dot, as it's my most colored dot in Paris. For the northeastern dot, I'd try my luck in the 17th, 18th and perhaps 19th arrondissement, le Sacré-Cœur is in the 18th. La Défense is in the northwestern dot, and the 16th is in the southwestern dot. Trocadéro has some interesting sights, there, with a splendid view on the Eiffel Tower, and the national architecture museum in Cité Chaillot.

The line crossing for the four dots is located close to Arc de Triomphe, precisely at Avenue des Ternes.

You can easily travel by metro and "secure" the dots by choosing an arrondissement within clear cuts. And it's enjoyable discovering the city whilst getting your dots.

This is going to be a bit of a long shot, but I have to try!

On July 30th I'll travel by train from Antwerpen to the Charleroi airport. The journey involves a change of trains in La Louvière. I'd like to get at least one note there to paint the dotmap in blue.

The twist is: according to the schedule, I have only 5 minutes available to try it, so going out of the station to any nearby shop is not a good option. So, does anyone know if I can get some notes at the station itself? Maybe some vending machine that gives notes as change? Or a small shop?

With this very small time to take your 2nd train ? Only the cash desk (= guichet) of the station.

all info's about La Louvière-Sud train station

ATTN 1 : it's easier (and direct !) to take a train which goes directly to Charleroi-Sud : Hxx:09 at Antwerpen-Centraal Hxx+1:57 at Charleroi-Sud.
ATTN 2 : no trains go to Charleroi Brussels South Airport, you must take the bus "A" from the "place des Tramways" (platform n°1), just next to the train station, to the airport. Départures : Hxx:15 and 45, arrival 18 minutes later.

La Louvière is in another dot, that's probably why dserrano5 wants to go through there...
I'm afraid I can't really help, except that I can say that for national trains, there are no trainbound tickets, every ticket you buy can be used on any train that brings you to your destination. So if you would miss your connection, you can take the next one. Or the other way around, you can take a train sooner, if you don't want to risk missing your flight...
La Louvière-Sud is in a dessert, the town is a km or so away, if not more. But there seems to be a small bar in the station, not sure it will be open on a Saturday, however. Ticket machines don't even take paper money, let alone give back...

When you search the route in google maps, it sends you via La Louvière. When looking in more specialised sites (eg. belgianrail.be or infotec.be) I was able to find a more direct route indeed. So I think, in the interest of time, that I'll renounce to catch the dotmap and I'll take the direct train+bus.

In a future installment of the same trip, that could happen in september or october, I may book a later flight so I have more time to take trains.

The fastest and often cheapest way is a bus from Brussels-Mid/Zuid station, you can find the timetable and tickets via the airport's website. But if you don't leave from Brussels, but from a station with a direct connection to Charleroi-Sud station, the train is a viable option, too, plus I think the trip is more interesting. Check if the combi ticket for train and bus isn't cheaper than buying them separately.

Probably due to the Canal Pride close to the market (or the passing tourists??) they did have too many as I received 3 when paying an amount of >5€ with an old design .
