Yes, I wanted to make a quick note about that yesterday. So, Tárrega, when you find an ATM giving out fivers, be prepared to make multiple withdrawals (ie. enter pincode-withdraw-repeat) if you want to stack up your

- it's the only way possible, as the machines don't afford you any sort of choice.

Thanks a lot Castanhola and Montgomery Burns for the tips! I look forward to insert my credit card into a
Multibanco, and hopefully get a nice Portuguese hit.. I mainly hunt by taking big notes with me, and slowly breaking them up during the stay. But I do have family in Portugal, and they should have a Portuguese bank account

So now I'm all over it! Does the machine tell you forehand which notes it contains or is it just a hit and miss? I'm very keen on searching for the 2002-series notes, collecting the crisp ones - and you seem to have quite many of them down there

Currently, ATMs indicate the type of banknotes they have. If they do not indicate this, you will have to request an amount that is impossible to obtain in banknotes (€9, for example). If you have family here, you just need to withdraw normal banknotes from the ATM without worrying about the type of banknotes, ask your family members to withdraw the same amount from a VTM, choosing the type of banknotes, then exchange the money (some banks that work very well are Millennium BCP, Banco Montepio, Caixa Geral de Depósitos, but in the latter case, you must select notes and coins withdrawal and then configurable withdrawal). Or you may find an EBTor in Lisbon who is willing to do this for you. If you pass through Coimbra, I'd be happy to help you.

Once you're at the withdrawals menu, press 9 for "Other amounts". You'll be taken to a screen showing you which denominations are available and an "enter your amount" field.
As for the 2002 fivers... I don't want to be a downer, but sounds like your expectations are a bit high

I find an old fiver once in a blue moon these days...

That was a very nice and warm thought of you Castanhola, thank you Unfortunately I won't get all the way to Coimbra this time

But I would love to do so one day in the future! And once again thanks for the meticulous details

Thanks! Alright. Yeah, I didn't expect them to exactly pop up everywhere like mushrooms on a rainy day, but I'm still hopeful

Anyway it's going to be great to get some small notes out of the wall, something that definitely ain't possible here in Denmark!

- Alegro Alfragide (incluindo o Auchan Alfragide)
Confirmam
Carnaxide, 2790-045?

Confirmo, sim senhor.

Ui!

Recheio Alfragide: 2610-185 AMADORA
IKEA ALFRAGIDE: 2614-520 AMADORA
Obrigado pela mensagem. Já acrescentei o Recheio ao post original.

Hello,
A big thank to user
brandao1962 for entering
this
bill in 2018 that I discovered yesterday, making it one of the longest hit I obtained.
Since their last entered bill was in novembre 2023, I hope they are well and that this hit will convince them to come back to us.
Cheers!
Jazzdream

aqui.

exchange machines
Montgomery Burns wrote: ↑Sat Dec 20, 2025 2:16 pm
They are few and far between around here... or simply non-existent - I don't recall any discussion about such a machine anywhere in Portugal
A bit late to the party here, but for future reference...
I was just re-visiting a few pages of another thread and it dawned on me that perhaps the the Bank of Portugal (BdP) machine seen at the end of
this post is an exchange machine of sorts... at the very least, it should exchange coins for bills. Unfortunately, you can't simply walk up to it and use it. You have to go through the person at the front-desk who will give you temporary credentials to use it - meaning it's probably not tourist-friendly.
That's my interpretation of it from that 2022 post, which did not include usage experience. Unfortunately, I don't recall any testimony from anyone who has
actually used it.
