Phaseolus, yes you are correct. Nickx, you would say that the people of Kosovo do not use the euro?

Yes, Kosovo is still a part of Serbia.euroland12 wrote:Phaseolus, yes you are correct. Nickx, you would say that the people of Kosovo do not use the euro?
Yes, Kosovo is part of Serbia
Yes, Kosovo uses the euro and not the serbian dinar
Also Montenegro uses the euro when it was part of Serbia-Montenegro (just like Kosovo was part of Serbia-Montenegro that time)
So, maybe in the list it could be listed as :
Serbia (only Kosovo)

Re: Territories Where The Euro Is The Official Currency?
This is some interesting recent news.
Effective January 1, 2008, prices in the so-called BES islands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba) have to be posted in guilders, euros and dollars. The government has decided on this measure to have the people get used to the value of these currencies.
This way, increasing the prices can be prevented with the introduction of another currency when the new political structure takes effect on December 15, 2008. The measure does not only apply to the prices for products and services, but also for the amounts on the pay slip. Companies get a transitional period of three months to get ready for this change. Effective April 1, Economic Affairs department (Deza) will start checking if everybody (companies and individuals) are complying with the measure. In the new political structure, Bonaire will have to choose a different currency than the current Antillean guilder.

French TOM are now POM (pays d'outre mer) and are largely autonomous unlike DOM which are more controlled by Paris . So French POM ( New Caledonia ,Tahiti/French Polynesia, Wallis & Futuna) have elected to stay with CFP (Franc pacifique) so far but are expected to switch to Euro soon or later.

For France, the difference between TOMs and DOMs are only interesting for geography geeks (like me)

So.. Generally speaking, the difference is that the other territories are switching to Euro because they are TOMs (which are now POMs) and other territories are switching to Euro because they are DOMs. I think I had better agree that there's quite a difference indeed. (the first letter, that is. Although it varies.)LITO wrote:French TOM are now POM (pays d'outre mer) and are largely autonomous unlike DOM which are more controlled by Paris . I do believe there's a difference among those two. But the differences between POMs and DOMs are only interesting for geography geeks, because they are not significant for anybody living outside them and/or mainland France.

The difference is significant for us. As far as I know all the DOMs (Reunion, Guadeloupe, Guyana and a few others) already use the Euro.Dakkus wrote:

Otherwise the difference is made by the various levels of autonomy, so yes, that's probably food for geeks

The euro will also become legal tender on British military bases in Cyprus, the first part of sovereign British territory to adopt the currency.

Right, the Netherlands Antilles guilder will come to an end in December 2008. But as far as I know, those triple displays won't be mandatory for too long: In mid-2008 the decision whether people there want the US dollar or the euro will be made. On one hand these islands will be (almost) regular Dutch cities then - on the other hand people are used to the US dollar anyway ...euroland12 wrote:Effective January 1, 2008, prices in the so-called BES islands (Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba) have to be posted in guilders, euros and dollars.

OM outre mer = over seas
DOM département d'outre mer
POM pays d'outre mer
COM collectivité d'outre mer
Yes Euro is in use in all 4 French DOMs and in most other islands which are part of the COMs ( collectivité d'outre mer ) .
The main difference beetween them is French law fully (almost) applies in DOMs , unlike POMs where France is basically only responsible for justice and defense , other COMs or so called "collectivités" are something in beetween that fits best to their identity (for exemple Wallis & Futuna islands are rulled by both France and 3 kings , Mayotte hopes to become a Departement/DOM but would have to give up a number of local laws) ; but back to EURO , besides the legal status of these islands , EURO was systematicaly intoduced everywhere French Franc was in use (most places) and may apply to others when they decide so ( those using Franc pacifique : New Caledonia , French Polynesia and Wallis & Futuna- change rate is invariable , 1€ = 119,3317 XFP or CFP...easy ':!:') .
Sorry for the headache ':?' ''

Re: Territories Where The Euro Is The Official Currency?
In Saint Barthelemy and Saint Martin (French side) when French Franc was the official currency , US $ was widely used and even prefered by a number of retailers , one restaurant in Grand-case (owned by an American gentle?? man) even refused anything else than US bucks. But now things have gone 180° , prices are in Euros everywhere and dollars are only tolarated '8)'
But I'm sure this will go 180° again if €/$ change rate goes reverse.
I Hope the Dutch west indies decide for Euro

All the best for 2008 !
