Oops, seems that you are right and VH is indeed a new letter combination on the serial number.

H and Z share the same checksum value (zero). I wonder if this means that VH is some kind of test serial put in circulation, just like we suspect to be the case for NZ and XZ. (SZ has also been printed but keeps on not showing up in the wild.)

EDIT: It is very very likely that SZ was never printed and the mistake arose precisely from a post I wrote myself, where I mistyped SZ instead of XZ.

So, for you : V003 = test plate ? Like Z002 ?

I don't understand this thing of the test series. What kind of test would it be? Tests are carried long before releasing bills, with papers, inks, impressions, wrecking them, putting them in different liquid solutions, washer machines, freezing and boiling and so on. And they are not put into circulation. Why should banknotes with XZ, NZ o VH serialnumbers be "test series"?

Well, here's what I can imagine: either a new stress test has been invented, or a new benchmark composed of old and new tests. This actually happens all the time.

What happens next might be the following (I'm kind of guessing here):

ECB wants to check how current banknotes cope with these new tests. In order to do that, it may be more reasonable to make a whole new batch of notes just for this purpose. Notes on the batch that are tested will eventually get shredded, even if they cope well with the tests, because they are no longer UNCirculated (for some reason, non-uncirculated notes may not be allowed to be issued from the central banks). Other notes on the batch will not be tested, because it's not required to test, say, a million notes, and that is the smallest "charge" you can make.

fcbruges, if I read it right, the article mentions the Bundesdruckerei as being one of the new 50-euro banknotes printers, but are you sure that it is solid information? The video shows only WA notes (which, by the way, have already been reported as public serials).

In the text is only a "W"-note mentioned!

Then again the article also says: "G&D ist neben der Bundesdruckerei in Berlin das einzige Unternehmen deutscher Herkunft, das die überarbeiteten Fünfziger für die Bundesbank produziert". So both Giesecke & Devrient (in Leipzig; don't think they still print notes in Munich) and the Bundesdruckerei produce them ...

This has now been done. You may need to hit (shift|control)-F5 on the note entry page to get the new javascript that validates serial numbers, or clear your browser's cache.

The first note is entered before the day the new note of is issued. I call that an offside!
