Re: "Europa": 2nd series of euro banknotes
Noo.. More U/Us to ruin my letter distribution... Europa series serial codes kinda made this hobby less interesting, soon long are gone the joys of finding odd F-lettered
or D-lettered
...
Re: "Europa": 2nd series of euro banknotes
I think the ECB website is updated. Can we expect
in circulation next year?

I would say not before end 2017 or even 2018 since there's usually a 1.5 to 2 year delay between quantities announcement and notes availability (those 4.7 billions
notes were for the year 2016).
And don't forget there's only a printer code on Europa notes now. If the central bank of Lithuania selects a printer which is already making
notes for other central banks (typically a privately owned group like Oberthur, De La Rue or Enschede), we won't be able to distinguish them.

Oké, so although thuis notes will be printed next year they first will be stored for some time before they will be distrubuted.LucasFr wrote:I would say not before end 2017 or even 2018 since there's usually a 1.5 to 2 year delay between quantities announcement and notes availability (those 4.7 billionsnotes were for the year 2016).

Can't we distungish them by the B/G code? (If printed at Enschede) Or will the Lithuanian

I don't know exactly why it takes so much time but it seems to be quite long. For instance the newludofaki wrote:Oké, so although thuis notes will be printed next year they first will be stored for some time before they will be distrubuted.
They will definitely be Europa series. But it's too early to say which printer will make them and how we'll be able to tell them apart (if that's ever possible). Can't we distungish them by the B/G code? (If printed at Enschede) Or will the Lithuanianbe Europe serie notes?

Yes, they print enough to put into circulation, but store them meanwhile.
Have a look to https://youtu.be/77GqqF90Yrc and see after minute 8:30. In youtube you'll see many more videos where thousands of boxes are stored.
About the letters, they do not tell anymore the country.
Old series banknotes where printed on behalf of national central banks. Deutsches Bundesbank printed bills with X, Banque de France with U, for example.
Every printer has a letter. In France, Banque de France L, and Oberthur, E. In Germany, Bundesbank (Bundesdrückerei) R, and Gesiecke & Devrient, P.
Since bank system unification in 2004, paper money is not issued on behalf of any national bank, but by European Central Bank.
As far as I can understand, this means that banknotes are not anymore identified by "the owner bank" or "the issuing bank", but only by the "printing facility".
Thus, since U was "the french letter", the bills printed by Banque de France are indicated by U. And the bills printed by Oberthur, by E.
Same way, as X was "the german letter", bills printed by the Bundesdrückerei keep X, ans the ones printed by Gesiecke & Devrient, R.
And same letter appear in both serialnumber and printer code.
Bills printed in countries with only one facility keep the old country letter.

Re: "Europa": 2nd series of euro banknotes
Regarding how long it will take to see the new
: We can NOT make any safe conclusions based only on how long it took for the
and the
yet. The
and the
, once they leave the bank, they will go back to a bank very rarely as they are being deposited individually or in very small quantities, therefore it takes much longer for the 2002 series to be recycled back into a bank/post office etc at any point and then withdrawn. Think about when was the last time you went into a bank and paid in any amount with only
and
.
The
and the
however, are (in most countries) the only / lowest denominations issued by ATMs, therefore, a single bank, can in one moment, withdraw their full bulk of 2002 series notes and simply supply the ATMs with the new series, (provided they have enough stock and they are instructed to do so), but my point is, that it is much much easier to collect all the 2002
, the
and so on, than the
and the
which do not end up back into the banking system in bulk and therefore are much more difficult to be collected and withdrawn, therefore there is a longer period in between the release of the new series of those small denominations. Not to mention that during the changeover period of 18 months for the
and the
, many banknotes of the new series, will ALSO have to be recycled due to tear and wear, so the production must not only be enough to cover the withdrawal of all 2002's, but to also replace the damaged banknotes of the new series as well, which already have begun to appear in increasing quantities.
Seeing that the denominations above
are those being counterfeited the most, a "big bang" changeover should not surprise us, with an ATM issuing only the new series and the 2002 series being withdrawn immediately, already packed and ready from the bank vaults, quickly and easily. And do not be surprised if you also see the
,
and
being changed all together at the same time, (since not that many of them will need to be printed to begin with. It will be even easier for those).
Of course some of you will tell me that in your country your bank issues
and
and you have been getting mixed 2002 and 2013 series together for months after each release etc etc. I know. Probably there were not enough
and
to cover a full withdrawal. Probably the ECB decided not to do it as not all banks in every country issue
and
. Probably because they still had a good amount of the old series and they wanted to use those up first. Probably because the
and
are of low counterfeiting risk. All I tried to explain though was that we will not necessarily have to wait 18 months for every new release after the
.
The

Re: "Europa": 2nd series of euro banknotes
I guess the delay between printing of the new Europa notes and their issue is due to the fact that they must first test the validating machines for shops, petrol stations and so on. Plus transporting large amounts of notes securely from the printers to the banks is not fast at all. So there's that.
Bye.
Bye.
