What do you like the most?

A database using a combination of serial code, print code and bill value. That way there's no need to know the print year.

A database using also the print year. I'm looking at the print year already. No problem for me!

Where did you read this?
There will be no replacement notes in Euroland.
Notes are printed in sheets, not in single notes. If one note would be printed with the same serial number, there would be a whole sheet of duplicate serial numbers.
Computers can reproduce more different serials on the same sheet, it doesn't have to be a numeric line. They have to keep the balance between amount of bills for each country. By reprinting this is the only way to do it.

The printing of notes is commissioned by an NCB to a printer 1 with the specification: print 40 mio notes using serial number 230,000,001 to 280,000,000, and to printer 2 ordering: print 15 mio notes using the range 310,000,001 to 330,000,000. What should a replacement order look like?
Just a list of serial numbers to reprint I guess.

They can't just replace an old bill by a new one or get more bills on the market when there is a need for it.. This could distabilize the economy!!!

Not to sound pushy, but where did you get this info?

In theory computers can print single serial numbers, but the printing process uses heavy metal numbering machines, 120 for one 6x10-sheet. To set each pair of that machines to an arbitrary serial number for one sheet - that is thinkable but highly hypothetical.

Re: Thomas

I remember I read it somewhere and I stunned me, that's why I remember it so well. If you look closely to any bill, you can see that the serial number is printed later on.

The destablizing of the economy was one of my first lessons economy. If you print more bills, the value will lower....

That's true. Numbering is done just before cutting the sheets into single notes. But that is no proof yet.

I only know that there are no replacement notes or sheets, and one serial number on a denomination is printed only once.

Keep the year. One can sort the notes by year before entering them in the future. Yes, still possible to make mistake, maybe there could be a "standard year" on advanced page as there's postal code now.

And, I don't expect 2003 notes to circulate that soon, the majority will stay 2002 (at least in the beginning of 2003).
I also think it's important. So, we'll be able to see which countries are printing which notes... :)

Maybe that can change soon. Belgium is already importing Spanish M-printed V-notes. Looks like they already need new 20E's :? . I hope they have lots printed in 2002. Otherwise, it'll be 2003 very soon.

The 20 EUR-note is the most "popular", the initial production was 3.4063 billion, 2002 production 1.555 billion and 2003 production will be another 1.0711 billion notes.

They are issued in 2002 by L (Finland), S (Italy), U (France) and V (Spain), while in 2003 by M (Portugal), P (Netherlands), U, V and X (Germany).

Re: Thomas

Where did you get that information? They can't simply produce notes without any consequences...

As far as *I* know, Wim *will* resign in 2003...

from the ECB website's FAQ at http://www.ecb.int/change/change.htm - at least for 2002. The 2003 figures should soon appear there, too.

Until then you'll have to look at me own website :-)

I have noticed that every note of 20 canadian dollars have been made in 1991. The 5$ bills have been made in 1986, etc...

So, I guess there won't be new euro-bills of each value every year. The stocks of the European Centra Bank might be important. They have already underestimated the need of coins...

I just imagine there will be a new printing wave when the 10 candidates for the membership will join the eurozone.
