There are big differences in Germany. Dresdner Bank in Geilenkirchen has 5, 10, 20 and 50 € notes - Dresdner Bank in Leipzig had in (in March) only 50 € bills.
Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf has ATMs with 20 and 50 bills only and some special ATMs with 5 and 10 as well. They call this "Taschengeld" (pocket-money). Some ATMs are marked as dispensing pocket-money, others not. Like Forrest Gump said: Life is like an ATM - you never know what you get.

Germany: Smallest bill dispensed by ATMs was 10 DEM, now it is 5 EUR, which is equivalent. Smallest default option in most ATMs was 50 DEM, now it is 20 EUR (=40 DEM), a remarkable innovation.eurobillsandcoins wrote:What legacy currencies did ATMs use to dispense as well? As far as I know in France I think it were 100F and 200F bills.

My father used to work in a bank before his retirement and he told me that some ATMs have few storage containers for banknotes while others have many. The containers are customizable to current needs. E.g. if an ATM is located in an area where mostly low amounts are drawn the bank will put smaller notes in. On 31.Dec.2001 some banks even put DEM and euro notes simultaneously into some ATMs and set the things to switch at 12 midnight from the storage containers with DEM to the ones with euro.
Here in Italy most ATMs used to give out 50.000 lira notes (i.e. about EUR 25). I think the convention between all the banks taking part in the "Bancomat" circuit allowed only for withdrawals of multiples of 50.000 lira.
In the last years, some ATMs gave out 100.000 lira notes, too, without asking the user for his preferences, but they always had 50.000 lira notes, too, just in case a user asked for an amount which wasn't a 100.000 lira multiple.
Now, most ATMs in my town have at least two denominations of notes inside. One of them is invariably EUR50, the other amount is usually 10 or 20. Again, they offer you no choice in how the money is split between different denominations. For example, yesterday I withdrew EUR 250 (which is usually the maximum per day on the Bancomat circuit) and I got 3 EUR 50 notes and 5 EUR 20 notes. Today, from another machine and for the same amount, I got 5 notes, all EUR 50 (I think they did this because tomorrow is a holiday, banks are closed, and today there was a big fair in my town so LOTS of people were queuing to withdraw money, so by only putting in EUR 50 notes they could serve more people without reloading it).
I never say any ATM issue EUR 5 notes, but this year I didn't try many ATMs outside my town, so I can't say it's a rule in all of Italy.
