It seems that in Switzerland I cannot withdraw Euros with my German Visa debit cards though the ATMs advertize that they dispense EUR and CHF.
Has anybody had the same problem? What cards do you use when withdrawing Euros?

The same happened to me last month in Lugano and Bellinzona with different debit card from Italian and German accounts.
I tried several banks, all ATMs say it was possible to have :note-20: & :note-50: (or :note-50: only), but after entering my cards I could choose Swiss Francs only.
Probably only swiss cards can obtain Euro notes.

If they are ATMs from the Euronet network this doesn't surprise me. They are rogue ATMs. They provide only "change" with foreign currency with a rate that I do not allow to withrow the foreign currency directly from you account in this currency.

They are many of them in Prague. I can withdraw euros with my CZK bank card but not with my EUR bank card. I never do this because the rate is close to what you can call robbery. exchange desks (when not rogue) are much more reasonable to get euros.

I wonder if nowadays UBS, Raiffeisen and CS would qualify as rogue ;-)
After a little research I can confirm that withdrawal of Euros is limited to card holders of the respective banks (or maybe Swiss cards). So for this thread it would be helpful to know what cards you use when withdrawing Euros.

I say Euronet is a rogue ATM system mainly because of the change rate that they force to you with usability anti paterns and all. To my experience in Czechia some banks like UniCredit or CS are following the same path :(

Now it is possible that some local law would forbid foreign banks to operate with their currency directly with the users in the country. Therefore the only way to withdraw euros in the country is via an exchange operation, hence from a non euro card. I remember some time ago there were (Travelex) ATMs in Prague airport where one could withdraw euros from a € card but they have been removed more than 5 years ago.

It appears that Raiffeisen in Austria is asking money for withdrawals. Maybe it is a good plan to make a list of which banks in what countries ask money for withdrawals.

In Poland, money exchanges (Kantor) will often be willing to change a 50 note for smaller denominations. No fee involved, just a friendly smile.

hellooo

I'll visit the US next year and I was wondering if any of you know if exchange bureaus in the US accept changing let's say a bunch of :note-50: for a :note-100:, :note-200: or even :note-500:. Also, if anybody has been to the states before, is it better to get us dollars from an ATM once I'm there or should I echange cash in the airport? Any euro atms around the NYC area?

Always best to get cash from an ATM.

I've never tried that, but I have tried the opposite (bringing a :note-50: or a :note-100: note and asking for smaller euro bills). It works most of the time (but not always) at exchange bureaus in airports. In my experience, it never works outside of airports, though it costs nothing to ask

A little something that popped up at another thread:
groentje wrote: Sun Jun 30, 2024 9:31 pm I managed to find an ATM in Sweden giving out Euros in a place that was not yet known. Please add. Sala to the Database. It's a town and municipality in Västmanlands län, according to Wikipedia in 59° 55′ 0″ N, 16° 36′ 0″ E.

Quite a few Swedish Bankomat ATMs have at least :note-20: , and at a reasonable rate. With the double exchange rate, I was hit with €64.68 for that €60 withdrawal. Not great, but there's worse. All information is on their website, you can easily select for just the ones giving out €.

One could also refer to my previous post in this topic about Swedish Bankomats:
Crazy Bob wrote: Tue Sep 06, 2022 10:17 am One of the Bankomat ATMs inside the ICA Maxi supermarket in Haparanda :flag-se: - the left one - dispenses euros. The ATM is clearly marked with "Valuta"-something, and has ATM-number 607501.

The fees are friendly; it cost me 1,25 euros to withdraw a single :note-20: .

And actually, the Bankomat site lets you search for all Euro ATMs in Sweden: https://www.bankomat.se/?filter=eur
Who wants to go on a Swedish dothunt?
