Google earth

Post by coastal »

First of all, if you haven't got it then get it right now If you like geography and maps and travelling, as many people here surely do, it's the most wonderful thing imaginable.

OK, here's an idea for anyone who has it. Post the most interesting image you can make using google earth of your town or city or street or whatever, any scale or angle. (Unfortunately not everywhere in Europe is yet visible in high resolution so you might not be able to see your house).

Here's mine:
Barcelona taken from the sea. Bottom left we have the Ramblas leading into Plaza Cataluña (with the big circle thing in the middle). Then past that is the grid plan of streets known as the Eixample. I live here where the yellow square is.

Oke, the program is downloaded, let's see what I can find.

EDIT: What a great program, I only don't know how to get those pictures in here.

I heard of it before. Unfortunately, my computer is too old and I am not planning to buy a new one soon.

Anyway, I make use of Google Earth, because I participate in the picture identification game at www.umluex.de . In the edition of yesterday you have to identify the location of this place: (it is not in Germany 8) )

intrigueing ... the buildings in the centre form a swastika

The History of the Swastika

The Oldest Known Symbol

The swastika ( ) is an ancient symbol. Dating back 3,000 years, the swastika predates the ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ankh (). Approximately 3,000 years ago (1000 BCE), the swastika was commonly used; swastikas have been found on many artifacts such as pottery and coins dating from ancient Troy.

During the following thousand years, the image of the swastika could be found in many cultures around the world, including in China, Japan, India, and southern Europe.

Now... where is it ??

Must be San Diego 8)

building shaped like swastika in san diego

It´s on the NAB next to Coronado in SD. Quick look at the streets (thanks to Earth Google) makes it look like either a Military Medical Center or Military facility. Most of the stuff on that part of Coronado is. The park right next to the buildings is Turner Park.

Approx coordinates are: 32´40´35 and 117´09´29. Streets in the are are weird: Tulagi, Eniwetok, Kwajalein and Bougainville.

source ...

this forum

edit :
I removed the source, because somewhere when clicking on one of the links I got a virus alert, so look out,
looking for swastika's in buildings may harm your computer

You can browse the same satellite maps from maps.google.com. Google Earth is just way cooler interface to use those maps. 8)

Most probably areas with huge amounts of "Braunkohle" which are being dug out:
http://www.christian-bruenig.de/nacht/rheinbraun.htm
Search for Rheinbraun and Braunkohle at Google for more information.

This is not really necessary.

AMD Athlon 1,4 GC/s (or GHz)
512 MB RAM
Cheap 32 MB graphics card (GF4 MX400)
resolution 1280x1024 - 32 bit

Windows 2000 SP4

The biggest neckhole is the download rate. And after this the HDD, because of the cache - up to 512 MB in the free version.

BTW,
have you already the Golden Gate Bridge or the Eiffel tower in your system?
If not, try www.googleearthhacks.com ;)
