Which place of entrance to give ?

Post by DrGreenTom »

it's maybe a stupid question, but heck so be it :

if you take a night train from Brussels to the south of France, and "somewhere" halfway you get hungry and buy something in the trains restaurant, then what is the place you have to enter for receiving the note ?

Here's what I would do:
If I had a GPS, I'd register the exact point I got the note, then find the closest point with a postcode and enter the note as if it were acquired there.
Since I don't have a GPS, I would probably chose my trip's starting point, instead of the train stop or even the train station closest to the point where I got it.

Btw, on a taxy, I always enter the arrival point, because that is where I pay; on a bus or subway, the departure point for the same reason.

Another options might be (as Dakkus pointed out below) the start of line (even if you didn't enter the train there). You might consider that the money travelling with the staff/crew came from there. Still another option would be the end of line (although I find no justification for this).

Finally, as I say below (regarding highway's tollbooths), you might also consider the option of registering your notes on the headquarters of the train company (presumably, they ultimately came from there).

Maybe you should make a poll with these options:
  • company's headquarters
    start of line
    departure point
village closest to the exact point (through GPS)
    closest train station
    closest train stop
    arrival point
    end of line
The same is also valid for air and sea (water) trips. Just substitute closest "stopover" or "port of call" for both "train station" and "train stop".

Bon voyage!

EDIT: Thanks to Dakkus below, I was able to edit my pro-poll post (see also my considerations below).

In train saying the place where the moneys have come from is probably a good option, too. So, if the train is Amsterdam-Paris and you come to it in Bryssel and are going to Paris, you still say the note's from Amsterdam, because that's where the train is coming from.
Though, because they might take load the money to the cash machine already before the train arrives to Amsterdam to leave back again, entering the place where the train was when you got the note and writing to the comment field "in Amsterdam-Paris train" (Still even if you come to the train in Bryssel) is probably the best option :)

Always when I have travelled by a ferry from Turku to Stockholm or opposite I've marked that the note is from Turku. The reason is that Swedish don't use euros and they don't bring there euros so much as they can use there also Swedish crowns.

Ok, I really neglected the option of registering the start of line or end of line, although I had thought of both. These options shouldn't be excluded in a poll, though.

But there is another option I missed in my message.
Whenever I travel by car and have to pay a toll at a highway's tollgate, I choose to find the closest postcode to the exact tollbooth's point, with the aid of a good map. Some times, that is really hard, though. The other option I thought of was to enter the headquarters of the highway's management company (if it is private, which I understand is very rare apart from Portugal).

I will edit my previous post adding these 3 options.

OK, i made the poll, following Imviterbo's advices.

But i have been thinking further about this : if you take a cruise ship, there usually is no real start of the line, as people can join in any harbour the ships stops, so i guess here the possibility mentioned above, about the company's headquartes, is not an option. Maybe here, we should have the option to enter "ocean" as the place where you got the note

I answered "first train-station the train drives through after you receive the note", but i think there should be place for thinking.

If train just went trough some station before, i would put there that station. When it's hard to make clear what station is nearest (next station, or previous which trains has went through), i would put next station.

Of course, if somebody have GPS, then nearest postcode/village is that place, because YOU got that note there. My opinion is that EBT's idea is, that you put exactly that place where YOU got that note.

If you put that place (maybe starting point) where they got change cash in, it's wrong. So, closest postcode is my choose.

In ships and airplanes it's hard to place yourself anywhere on the map, so maybe then we can do some exceptions.

Whenever I set out on a trip, I have lots of Fivers with me so I can spread more notes. For this reason I do not worry too much. I will certainly pay with fivers and such I will not get any change back. (Moreover, food and beverages in trains here is so expensive that I buy that stuff in a supermarket before I leave)
