Forged Euro Coins

Post by ZEUS »

Substantial rise in forged euro coins

Last year saw a big leap in the number of forged euro coins, according to data released on 22. January by the European Commission.

Over 26,000 counterfeit euro coins were last year found in circulation and removed by national central banks - up from 2,339 in 2002.

Two-euro coins have seen the most counterfeit activity rising from just over 1000 forged coins in 2002 to over 19,600 coins in 2003.

Three illegal coinshops were dismantled last year, two in Italy and one in Portugal.

They forge them mainly in middle east and some old socialistic countries. I think the fake French 10 fr coins were minted in middle east. It became so big problem that in some areas there were more fake ones than real ones. Then they changed it to a bimetal coin which is more difficult to forge. Of course, the forgers have also developed their methods during the past 10 years.

I had a fake French bimetal coin 10F too. You could press out the center of the coin. Apart from that fact, you couldn't see it was fake. We've spent it at the 'peage' at a highway  .
