My usual reasoning as a plotter is to assume that when some ebtist defines a "city" as Small Place - Larger Place, as is the case here, the note probably was from Small Place, and s/he was just trying to specify exactly which Small Place this is within an universe of several places named the same as Small Place, without realizing that Small Place + Zipcode would most likely be enough to define the exact place.

So I believe we can take an educated guess and assume the location here should be 5640 Maison.
Since there are profile for both under the same zip I wouldn't guess...

8O Maybe you're right but not because of that.

If there weren't a profile for Saint-Gérard (5640) some city-admin would create it if that was the right thing to do. That there are already profiles for both "cities" under the same zip, in fact, doesn't affect my reasoning a bit.

So what's faulty in my stream of thought? Or maybe you didn't quite get it -- I'm sorry for the long convoluted sentence  (but then again that's something you're most used to in German ;))

Although guessing isn't a form of sience, you were right. Both locations are small, but 5640 Maison is even smaller. Maison-St-Gérard doesn't exist (Saint-Gérard won't even be on the roadsign - because it isn't a commune in Wallonia)

So :flag-be: 5640 Maison-St-Gérard should be assigned to :flag-be: 5640 Maison

Well, I knew that Maison was smaller than Saint-Gérard, I checked it, that of course was not part of my guessing. I just guessed that, being smaller and in the outskirts of Saint-Gérard, it would be very unlikely if anyone in Saint-Gérard was calling it Maison-St-Gérard, but it would be more than natural that someone in Maison would call it Maison-St-Gérard. Not science, not even guessing, just common sense, actually... (Apparently, there are even locals who call it Maison-Saint-Gérard, as in http://ditch4.skyrock.com/6.html.)

In Wallonia, only communes have road signs? Weird...

(And... I know you wrote it in parentheses, but how does that have to do with the issue? Even if St.-Gérard doesn't have a location road sign, Maison certainly wouldn't have it at all.)

Sign of locations in Belgium are like this :

Image

Walshoutem is the village
Landen the name of the municipality (commun)

So, in the example of 5640 Maison this sign would be Maison - Mettet.

And to make it complex Saint-Gérard is a partmunicipality of Mettet

Maison is part of the partmunicipality of Saint-Gérard

So, after all, there must be a road sign for the village of Saint-Gérard, which is indeed a village in its own right inside the Saint-Gérard section de commune (deelgemeente), an area encompassing some more villages, including Maison, which most likely will have its own road sign on road N 988, too. After all, it's the same that happens in Portugal, in Spain, in France or in Italy, and probably in many other countries.

To make it even more difficult, every commune is boss, so e.g. Deinze will only show plates for Deinze, without the individual placename on it, some, like Deerlijk, even has a plate for Statiewijk.
