Huomasin että tämän sivuston tietokantatekniikka on toteutettu MySQL:llä. Kuulemma se ei ole laajoissa tietokannoissa tehokas joten eikö tuo asia pitäisi korjata eli käyttää jotain tehokkaampaa tietokantaserveriä, kuten PostgreSQL? Sain jo muutaman kerran virheilmoituksia liiasta käyttäjämäärästä.

I noticed that the database technique of this webiste has been done using MySQL. I've heard that it's not very effective with large databases, so this thing should be fixed right? Use some more efficient one like PostgreSQL? I already got couple error messages of too many users.

Niin no, jokaisella tuntuu olevan oma mielipiteensä siitä mikä on paras tietokantaohjelma, itse suosin Ingresiä koska se on melkoisen tuttu ohjelma työpaikan tietokantajuttujen takia. Tässä EBT:n tapauksessa valinnanvapautta rajoittanee huomattavasti se, että www.eurobilltracker.com on majoitettu johonkin ovh.net'n palvelinhotelliin (miten hyvin tuo "ovh.net" sopiikin näihin eurojuttuihin..) eikä heillä ole varmaan tarjottavana kuin yksi tietokantaohjelmisto, joka nyt sattuu olemaan MySQL. Ja kyllähän tuota MySQLää käytetään monissa laajemmissakin jutuissa, enkä usko että Postgres olisi tässä tilanteessa ainakaan mitenkään oleellisesti parempi, jos ollenkaan. Painivat molemmat aika lailla samassa sarjassa..

Normaalioloissa MySQL varmaan pärjää ihan hyvin, mutta tasatuntien kohdalla tulee hiukan ongelmia kun tilastoja päivitetään ja tietokantayhteyksien määrä loppuu kesken. Tästä oli jo jossakin muualla hiukan juttua.

Well, everyone seems to have their own opinion about the best database management system, although I personally prefer Ingres for work-related reasons. www.eurobilltracker.com is hosted on a virtual server, so the webmaster most probably didn't have a choice. MySQL is widely used as well, and I don't think Postgres would be significantly better than MySQL in this respect, if at all.

During normal operation MySQL does just fine, but it chokes a bit when the statistics are generated every hour.

Joo, MySQL on aika lelu. Onkos sen käyttämä kieli edes SQL:ää, eihän MySQL:llä voi mun käsittääkseni tehdä edes relaatiotietokantoja? Noita "Too many users" -ilmotuksia tulee aina silloin tällöin.

Yup, MySQL is a toy. Is that language that is used to operate MySQL even SQL, AFAIK you can't even make relational databases with it? I have those "Too many users" announcements every once in a while, too.

MySQL on kyllä ihan hyvä veppisovelluksiin, ja ainakaan tässä tapauksessa vika ei ole itse moottorissa vaan sen asetuksissa:

Kyllä se on SQL:ää ja nimenomaan relaatiotietokanta. Ilmeisesti MySQL ei toteuta standardia täydellisesti mutta ei se missään nimessä huono tuote ole.

It's SQL and a relational database. Obviously MySQL doesn't have all features listed in SQL standard, but it a good quality product.
