Currencies with more than one subdemonination?
Does anyone here know of any currency that has more than one subdenomination?
It's actually a bit fascinating that the subdivision of 100 has become so common, I think I've heard of some currency that has 1000, but the exceptions must be quite few.

The first thing that came to my mind that the currency they use in Harry Potter books (galleons) has actually two subdenominations, the silver and the bronze things... I have just looked it up, they are called sickles and knuts...

What about the 'old' Pound Sterling?
Until 1971 1 Pound equaled 20 Shillings which equaled 12 Pence each. And before 1960 1 Penny was worth 4 Farthings.

That's what I was going to add to this post!
That was rather crazy!
Now, as far as I know, here are currencies whose subdivision is not based on 100 cents:
Country ....................Currency...............Subdivision.............Equivalence
Bahrain........................Bahrein dollar.........Fill......................1000 Fill = 1 Dinar
Cyprus before 2008........Cyprus Pound..........Mils....................1000 Mils = 1 Pound
Irak............................Iraki Dinar.............Dirham & Fil..........20 Dirham = 1 Dinar & 1000 Fil = 1 Dinar
Irán............................Rial.....................Toman.................10 Toman = 1
Jordan........................Jordan Dinar............Fil......................1000 Fil = 1 Dinar
Kuwait.........................Kuwaiti Dinar..........Fil......................1000 Fil = 1 Dinar
Mauritania....................Ouguiya.................Khoum................5 Khoum = 1 Ouguiya
Oman..........................Omani Rial.............Baiza..................1000 Baiza = 1 Rial
Tunisia........................Tunisian Dinar.........Millime................1000 Millime = 1 Dinar
Vietnam.......................Dong....................Hao & Xu..............100 Xu = 10 Hao = 1 Dong
Yemen.........................Yemen Dinar & riel....Fil......................1000 Fil = 10 Riel = 1 Dinar
I know all these because I collect coins
And also lots of other curiosities of these and other currencies

Re: Currencies with more than one subdemonination?
Although those 100units seem to be standard subdenomination there are many countries which have them only for calculation reasons but use less units instead:
Most famous: Finland does not use any coin below 10? cent even though these pieces are legal tender. Which results in a subdenomination of 10 units (of 10 cent each)
In Norway only pieces of 50 Øre are used resulting in a Krone of 2 units (of 50øre each).
I guess there are more countries which use less then 100 units especially those with currencies only worth a little...
While some arabic countries have 1000units subdenominations by law in Europe 1000 are used for calculations at gas stations.
So let's conclude: 100 looks nice but isn't always the truth

Likewise in Denmark and Sweden.doiknow wrote:In Norway only pieces of 50 Øre are used resulting in a Krone of 2 units (of 50øre each).
Here in the Netherlands all cash transactions are rounded to 5 cents (I believe it's the same situation as in Finland), so one could also argue for a 1/20 subdenomination. Strangely the same was the case here before the euro, only the 5 eurocent is worth more than twice than the guilder cent.
My NIG stats have finally disappeared. My EBTST stats are still available.

Not all of them, even in some (AC-)restaurants you will get 1c and 2c coins in return.R/J wrote:Here in the Netherlands all cash transactions are rounded to 5 cents

Re: Currencies with more than one subdemonination?
For what doiknow says... yeah, I suppouse is the same as in Spain in the 80's. The smaller coins disapeared and during a while there was the "half peseta coin" used as the subdenomination of our currency.

And also the Aldi Supermarket en Postoffices don't round the cash transactions.eddydevries wrote:Not all of them, even in some (AC-)restaurants you will get 1c and 2c coins in return.R/J wrote:Here in the Netherlands all cash transactions are rounded to 5 cents
Funny when you pay in another shop with those small coins they don't want to accept the coins. But money is money, the coins are still valid, so the're not allowed to refuse the coins
But I usually bring them to the bank, because I always pay with paper money lol

I don't know, but living in these countries could be a reason why someone is not familiar with "paper money"
