Summer EBTM09: General information

I just used the service of the "Wiener Linien", to buy tickets online: http://shop.wienerlinien.at/.
Than you can order tickets and download them as pdf-file, print it at home and use it from arrival.

So now I could buy "Die Wochenkarte" starting this Monday (17 August), allthough I only arrive at Tuesday.
But now I can travel through Vienna until Monday 24 August (9.00) for €14,00 (otherwise I schould buy the 72h-Stunden-Ticket: €13,60). So now I'm travelling Friday, Saturday, Sunday and early Monday for €0,40 ).

But please be aware, that if you ordered a rover ticket for Vienna, you need also to validate an additional ticket for one zone (€ 1,80) for the transportation between airport and the city (just in case you are taking the S-Bahn).

Actually, you can choose to get the tickets from and to the airport as well (that's what I did too):

With the question "Benötigen Sie zusätzlich ein Zug- oder S-Bahn-Ticket für den Flughafentransfer?" you can choose between:

• CAT - single ticket;
• CAT - return ticket;
• ÖBB - single ticket;
• ÖBB - return ticket;
• ÖBB - single ticket (child);
• ÖBB - return ticket (child).

After downloaded my ticket, it consist of only one paper, with the text: "Wochenkarte Wien / Zone 100 / ÖBB - Hin- und Rückfahrt
17,60 EUR / inkl. 10% USt"
There's no space for a stamp to validate in the S-Bahn, but it's also printed on the ticket: "Flughafen - Wien Gültig am 18.08.2009; Wien - Flughafen Gültig am 27.08.2009"

Some extra information for those who want to get it too: you need to have your ID with you (with ordering, you choose which ID you want to identify yourself), because the ticket is only valid with one.

How to find the right zipcode during your stay?

Austrians zip codes are four-digits. For searching the right postcode you can use this search engine of the post.at - webpage.

But especially for Vienna finding the right zipcode is quite simple, because every district of the town has its own zipcode (and there are only 23th of them). So if you got a note and didn't receive a check where the address is noticed, then just take a look at the next street corner where you will find the district and streetname on a blue sign. First - if necessary - make the districtnumber two-digit and afterwards insert this number in the following string replacing the dots: "1 . . 0"

And because my explanation may be a little bit confusing just 2 examples


But no rule without exception:

Vienna Airport: the airport belongs to the town of Schwechat, but you can still use the adresses like "1300 Wien" or "1300 Wien-Flughafen" (and a hint for dothunters: the airport belongs to the same dot like Vienna!)

Vienna International Center (United Nations): if you are lucky and get access to the UN-buildings, which are extraterritoriality, you can use the special zip code 1400". But the area itself lays in the 22nd district. (so 1220 is suggested outside of the VIC).

Schwechat is a independent community hosting the airport, so if you want to use "Schwechat" as town name, then you have to take "2320 Schwechat"! In the mid-19th-century the old villages around Vienna were suburbanized, so the old names are still exist (and there are some Viennese users who are using this name-extensions like Wien-Kaiserebersdorf or Wien-Inzersdorf), but the boundaries are not always really clear and it is a challenge even for locals! The only clear distinction are the postcodes!

Well the name of the 'town' of the Vienna Airport is officially "Wien Flughafen" (i.e. the airport is it's own town, and notice: NO hyphenation), postal code 1300. Schwechat is the municipality that the airport belongs to, and also the profile where all notes from Schwechat and the airport will end up.

That's one of the two drawbacks when printing the ticket yourself
with the other one being it is not transferrable, whereas the regular
"Wochenkarte", if bought at the ticket office (or by me, see below), is.

LAST CALL!

If you are staying for several days in Vienna, probably the best way to move around using public
transportation is the use of a "rover" ticket that lasts for one week (a "weekly transit pass").
It's only 14€ and you can use it with any public transportation inside the boundaries of Vienna.

There are two drawbacks to this:
1.) The ticket is valid from Monday midnight to the following Monday, 9 am of a given week,
___not for one week starting at a given time, i.e. when you buy it or first use it.
2.) You can only buy this kind of ticket on Monday and Tuesday, not any later.

Since most of you will arrive in Vienna on Thursday (or Wednesday earliest), you won't be able
to buy it. However, I can offer to buy a limited number of tickets in advance and sell them
at no extra charge. If you are interested in this, please contact me via private message.

please contact me NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, August 18th, 9:00 am

This morning I found out, the regulations concerning travelling by plane has been stricted.

It's not allowed to take some liquid in your hand-luggage.

I took two bottles with (half a liter each of) cola to drink in the airplane and I had to drink it prior to pass the security check.
It's a lot: drinking a liter of cola quickly (I had to, because otherwise I would be late for boarding).
At the security-check they found my deo. I wasn't allowed to take it with me too, so I could choose: check it in for luggage or leave it. I chose for the last (I didn't want to lose more time by checking in one bottle of deo).

So, for those still have to leave: put as many things as you can in your luggage and not in your hand-luggage.

Indeed: since I joined EBT (February 2006), I always traveled by car (to be able to get some stops on my way).
