I have read that Sweden will allow one of its town to use only euro! It's Tornio, at the finish border.
Haparanda (in Finland) and Tornio (in Sweden), will unify to be the first Eurocity of the EU! The Euro will be used there...
Could someone in Sweden or Finland tell us more? I'd like to know more about this brand new situation!
It has been very easy to cross the border. Since 1958 there hasn't been any passport controls between the Nordic countries. Many Swedes work in Finland and Finns in Sweden. Also many Finns live in Haparanda.
These two towns have a long history of cooperation.
A new project is to link the towns physically across the national border. It got green light on July 4, 2002 http://www.pagransen.com/eng_summary/index_eng.htm
I think Haparanda people had chance to vote about creating a "shared center" for two cities last weekend when there was election in Sweden, but people didn't want to happen.

Please correct me if I'm wrong...
Yes, majority (53 %) of voters in Haparanda said no to this project. Maybe Swedes were afraid of that they have to learn to speak Finnish;) . They also thought that it is too expensive.

I thought most people in Haparanda (I should prefer the proper form Haaparanta - if you understand Finnish) already speak Finnish - or "Meänkieli" which I still think is only a dialect of Finnish. So maybe it's the money... or maybe they are just boring
Though I know I wouldn't vote yes if say St.Petersburg and Helsinki were to become one city. I hope this isn't the what the Haparandeans though.
