I subtitle movies, documentaries and television series for Dutch television and have been doing so for the past eighteen years. I work at home and I am a freelance worker, self employed, which gives me a lot of freedom. And some worries, sometimes :?

At the moment, for example, I am subtitling an episode of Law and Order, Special Victims Unit, for a Dutch TV station.
Ah, so you're the one I shout at when people think I'm shouting at the TV.

Obviously it's not your work I have a problem with, just those other translators'...
Don't get me started!
Hmmm. I think I still have a list of gaffes on the computer somewhere. Most of them are clearly due to the translator simply not understanding the words, expressions or situations they have been presented with. Colloquialisms could be incredibly funny if it weren't so sad that they get mistranslated. I don't pretend to be fluent, but I catch them out at an alarming rate.

PS. I can't remember posting here recently. I am in the curious position of being a tracker who works for a bank, yet never sees any cash.

That would stand for Human Resources, one of these newfangled appellations. In ordinary English personnel Manager.
