My experiences with banks here have been dismal. So far I've been to three Rabobank branches, two ABN-AMRO branches, one Fortis Bank branch and one ING branch. None of them had any cash operations (at least not for non-customers). The one place where I did manage to change some money was De Nederlandsche Bank, but even there the amount that I managed to change was far less than what I had wished to change. Other than the banks, the only places willing to change money are foreign exchange agencies, but they charge 1% commission for Euro-Euro changes. Reasonable if you consider that they need to make some money, since the introduction of the Euro probably killed most of their business, but from my point of view I can only say that no way in hell am I paying a commission for changing Euro bills into other Euro bill denominations!
Does anybody have any suggestions that don't involve the use of ATM's? Thanks in advance.

You don't have to play, just insert your notes and then choose cash-out. Often an employee brings you your 'profit' so you can even ask for some denominations if you want.

I can't think of any way of getting many notes by not using an atm...
The only way that comes to my mind is that you use one of my old bank cards so you can do like you're a client of the bank. Let's hope you don't have to indentificate yourself. But that happened only once in my EBT-membership. But still then I think you're be able to come up with a nice story to explain it's not your card.
The thing they do with my card at my bank when I change money is simply copying the bank account number. Since a short time they use the regular card reader for this. I don't know yet if it recognizes that a card is still valid or not when it's only used for this function...

If you want to change into larger bills, you can ask at most shops (they almost are in need for fivers).

Just a note to let you know that a friend of mine has arrived in Amsterdam this morning for a short holiday.
He has brought with him 30 notes (20 of which are new K-T notes) and 30 notes (20 of which are new R-X notes).
