How to find postal codes?

Post by bjornmu »

I'm an infrequent user, living in a non-Eu(ro) country, but I've added notes from vacations etc. One problem I've had is to find the postal code to enter. In one village in Greece, I went into a hotel and grabbed a brochure, hoping to find their address. :roll: Is there a general source for this somewhere?

Great, thanks! I should have spent a bit more time looking through the site, I assumed something like this would be somwehere. :oops: Now I'm soon ready to bring some :note-50: from Norway to Luxembourg, plus some smaller ones I got in Dublin almost a year ago. :)

This site is also very handy: http://www.geopostcodes.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

By Googling an establishment's name you can usually get their address with postal code. A lot of places also print it on their receits.

Pro Tip: If you know the name of the town you're in you can use postal code 00000 when entering notes and EBT will automagically suggest one fore you. In my limited experience it has newer been wrong.

I just tried entering a note with postalcode 00000, but there was no suggestion of a real postal code.

The best way is use the link klapotec posted already, and otherwise google for the local post service

Some time ago, Nerzhul posted a link to a reverse geocoding tool. Click on any location and it'll pop up a bubble giving address and post code (amongst other things).
I use it sometimes when I'm looking for postcodes (or to double-check an address) and it proved remarkably accurate so far.

Hmm, I looked at the Luxembourg site and was not very much wiser. There is no general postal code for Luxembourg City, even for smaller towns it's not possible to find one postal code, you *have* to provide a street.
That's just too much trouble. :?

Belgium was much easier: Brussels=1000, Brugge=8000, Ghent=9000

Avoid the NLs, then. Each street, or part of a street, has its own postal code, especially if you add the 2 letters.
And Belgian isn't that easy, Brussels has 1000, but the other municipalities in Brussels have their own (e.g. 1030 for Schaarbeek, 1070 for Anderlecht, etc). In the other bigger cities, the former municipalities also have their own postal codes, e.g. 3001 for Heverlee near 3000 Leuven.

I did end up using 1000 for anywhere in Brussels, and 2561 (for my hotel close to the train station) for anything in Luxembourg City. I found other codes for both city's airports. All the 18 notes I got as change in Luxembourg (but not the 10 :note-20: from the ATM) I kept so I can spend them in Finland this summer, instead of re-spending them immediately in Belgium. 8)

With a high enough zoom level in google maps, right click in the desired place and then click "What's here?". Google will give details of the selected place (or a near one), including the postal code. That's how I found nearly all the postal codes for the cities I visited recently during my dothunting trip to the Netherlands.
