No, you would use fopen and use a URL to the other server as a file name. then you would insert to data and format it as you wish in your templates.
oh yes, PHP is more than a script language, that solves this one. And as it seems, for the templates and stylesheets there are solutions, too.

You don't have a notes part per se and I don't have a coin part. All URLS in my coins sites are actually URLs to your site and vice-versa. Except maybe images!
Here we are, back to the kernel question: I shall not collect my own notes, which I additionally POST into your database, but I close my note database and POST only. That means: no additional features! Except you accept them and they don't distract from your site's purpose.

That is still hard to swallow. Here is the balance sheet:
  • You get access to my coin database
  • I get access to your note database
  • I lose my notes, the possibility of new developments and my independence
  • you lose nothing
It's not that I think you should lose anything :-).

Pooling note data, while keeping existing sites intact: is that really inacceptable to you?

I don't think we need a coin database at this site at all ...

That speaks for my proposal to pool the data of the notes while keeping existing sites intact. That enlarges the hit probability for all users, even for EBT users :-)

Yes, here is why.
  • the gain is asymetrical : EBT gains a few more notes (relative to the numbers here) from your database while your site gains a lot by benefiting from the far greater EBT database.
I have to write additional (complex) code that does not provide new features
I expose EBT to hacking attempts by adding another entry point into the system
Hence my proposal in one of the original posts of this thread which looked more symetrical in terms of gains for both sites.

As for your point about not being able to add more features if you closed you notes section, here are my thoughts
  • I'd be very happy to share the code with you so you could add the features yourself if you wanted
I don't recall that you added that many features since opening the site anyway, especially with regards to the number of features added here
Sorry but I don't have much time these days to go on with this discussion :)

Good points :-).

I liked your proposal in principle - with one major obstacle: I have to close my note data base.

If I keep my note data and receive only the data of the first entry of your notes but not the data of follow-up entries of a hit note (while sending ALL entry data of my site to yours [I wanted to make this proposal in an earlier posting, but space is limited]), then tracking a note of your site would only be possible at your site, not mine. EBT would remain _THE_ major tracking site.

Your gain by receiving all my note data is the same, regardless of keeping or closing my note data base.

One could even think about: For each note I send to you, you send one note to me (or two, three, ... [your data base is 30 times larger than mine])

But if you propose closing my data base: no chance.

Some "features" are not visible: to create my crosstables, I preprocess (during data entry) some note data like printer code and store info into more than one column. To add a column in an SQL-table is a non-trivial affair. I would have to be a webmaster of your site to do that.

Readers of this thread surely remember that you and some of your users asked me to "unite the forces" ... :-)

I guess I'm still open to cooperation: by coexistence and preserving diversity (see earlier postings in this thread).

But you are the market leader and you can try to dictate the price :-).
