Will Sweden vote in favour of the Euro ?

Post by Skylimit »

Tony Blair has made it clear again, that he wants Britain to join the Euro...
But with Irak on the agenda and worldwide bad economic conditions, and maybe a crash in housing prices (Britain) which may cause recession, the referendum will probably not be held this year. When conditions are uncertain people would vote NO to major changes anyway.

Denmark has made it absolutely clear that not being in the Euro-zone is hurting the economy, and Denmark is excluded from important financial decisions that also influence their position. Denmark will hold a new referendum probably next year.

Sweden will have a referendum later this year (don't know the exact date) Currently 50% is no, and 45% is yes. It doesn't look good. Also if the USA invades Irak people will not vote for change.

A possible yes from Sweden, would almost certain mean a yes for Denmark, which would put trumendous pressure on the UK being only member outside the EMU.

So this vote from Sweden is very important ...

Will it be yes, or no ??
Time is on our side ...

We as Finns have a responsibility

Post by Antti »

They MUST vote yes.
I think we here in Finland as their neighbours have a huge resposibility here, because the Swedes want to know what will happen and who else will they ask than the mearest eurocountry. So we must be active and convince them that euro is a good thing and the changeover was easy.

I HOPE they will vote yes. I appreciate very much that we have the Finnish outpost for the euro. That might draw Sweden and Denmark into the zone.

By the way, I wonder if countries can get fired from the euro zone :? E.g. Germany with the worst economics of the entire euro zone. Fortunately many people (including me) are not yet fully accustomed with the euro and still count in deutschmarks. That will make things easier when we'll have to switch back to DM next year  The smooth introduction of the euro has shown that it's easy to switch to another currency - why not do again from time to time?

I can't imagine them fire Germany from the eurozone. Germany is the biggest country after all and has thereforth a huge importance. Firing a small vountry would be easier (I still don't think it would be easy though)

I hope Sweden will vote in favour of the euro; I can't forecast the future, the only thing I'm sure about is that there will be a very small difference between yes and no.
Moreover, not being in the euro since the beginning is an advantage, including the fact that after the experiences of other countries, the governement will take some measures to avoid inflation (which made the euro rather unpopular here :( )

I'd say Sweden votes YES for the euro. Many voters haven't yet made opinion about it, they want to hear their labour unions opinions first. And Swedish PM, Göran Persson is strongly pro euro too and he's pretty popular.

I guess it will be YES. Some candidates (Slovenia...) have already said they want to get euro as soon as possible.

Damm, I don't even have all the coins from Finland yet!!
