Do you use alcohol when celebrating first of May?

Post by romppu »

Hello there! Especially here in Finland first of May is a day, when almost everyone is drinking... and a lot. How do you celebrate? I have some wine, but that's is. (I added the same poll in Finnish forum as well)

It's the birthday of Juliana (she was the Dutch Queen from 1948 untill 1980), but she passed away earlier this month.
But we always kept April 30 as Queen's Day (also after she wasn't Queen anymore). And I think the Dutch will keep it this way, don't ask why...)
People can sell their own old stuff on the street, everybody is doing it.
Some children play some music too, they can earn some money that way :D
Maybe we keep it on this day so it'll be nice weather for selling stuf :D

It is held on the 30th of april for two reasons:
The first one is to keep the memory of Queen Juliana alive and the second one is like Fons wrote, the actual birthday of our present queen Beatrix is january 31th, a bit cold for outdoor activities like selling stuff and playing games outside.

When Prince Willem-Alexander (the son of Queen Beatrix) will be on the throne, I think the celebration will still be held on april the 30th (his birthday is on april 27th).

And I never use alcohol. 8)
The first of may means nothing for me..... I always wondered way they call it Labour Day because the majority doesn't work on that day.

Weather is rather nice here in the north of Belgium, so we'll probably go out to get a beer of two on one of those nice outside-bars we have here in Lommel :D But going there has nothing to do with being May 1 or not; we'd go there anyways 8)

Same for me also - it's a redundant day in my opinion.

It's time for politicians to promise things which they can never hold

I never have celebrated the 1st of may. The fact that I don't work today is because I took vacation this weekend because tomorrow we have a race.
Usually I have to work on the 1st of may.
I think the only ones who celebrate is the SPa(Belgian socialist party)
