I think it's just a matter of cultural differences. Americans are simply not very embarrassed about telling around their own mistakes. Maybe that culture of non-embarrassment provides the fertile soil for outstanding advances in science, technology and other fields (including movies)

We Europeans are often a bit too engaged in laughing about losers - a habit which makes everyone afraid of trying unusual things.

With trying unusual things I actually meant the childlike creativity which can sometimes achieve great new ways of thinking or doing.

But I knew that darwinawards site. My favourite one is the guy whose phone rang during the night. He reached for his phone in the dark and accidentally grabbed his gun and shot himself in the head. (I don't have a direct link.)
