What if you already are a successful and well established singer/group in a fairly big market? Participating in the ESC won't really promote your career unless you win. And in case you end up with very few points, it would not look very good ... I know this does not apply to all countries that take part in the ESC. But it sure does for Germany and the UK for example.
And as for the national votes, well, for some reason we seem to have groups of countries that tend to give many points to their neighbors on a mutual basis. That usually works with Cyprus and Greece, but also with some Nordic/Baltic countries. Hard to tell whether that is due to musical preferences or to other factors.
Now this year's winner, well, I prefer groups like Loituma

over bands that appear as a mix of ZZ Top and Star Trek, but Lordi winning was still a refreshing change. Seems a good stage show does not necessarily have to be like a lingerie presentation, hehe.
