LORDI was the best group indeed, but honestly, I had doubts they would win, but I'm very happy they did!
It's good news, it seems they stopped to validate only pop songs.

Here in Portugal it's still the same thing, the one who gets to represent the country is always one of the worst musics, I wonder how and why...
Of course, this year we didn't even got to sing! Hope they've learned something from it!

Go LORDI!!!

What if you already are a successful and well established singer/group in a fairly big market? Participating in the ESC won't really promote your career unless you win. And in case you end up with very few points, it would not look very good ... I know this does not apply to all countries that take part in the ESC. But it sure does for Germany and the UK for example.

And as for the national votes, well, for some reason we seem to have groups of countries that tend to give many points to their neighbors on a mutual basis. That usually works with Cyprus and Greece, but also with some Nordic/Baltic countries. Hard to tell whether that is due to musical preferences or to other factors.

Now this year's winner, well, I prefer groups like Loituma  over bands that appear as a mix of ZZ Top and Star Trek, but Lordi winning was still a refreshing change. Seems a good stage show does not necessarily have to be like a lingerie presentation, hehe.

Nightwish once tried taking part in the ESC. But back then the national contestant was chosen by a committee of music "gurus", who decided Nightwish was too barbaric to perform internationally or something like that :D
I know that, shame on them.
It was before Nightwish broke through internationally. They won the national voting, but this committee overruled peoples choice and sent Nina Åström instead, who scored 18 points and took 18th place out of 24, very typical result for Finland in ESC.

Those Finns are crazy.

Collector coin to be minted in honour of Finland's Eurovision winner
http://newsroom.finland.fi/stt/showarti ... up=General

"A special collector coin is to be minted in honour of Lordi, the monster masked Finnish hard rock group that won the Eurovision song contest. Raimo Makkonen, chief executive of Mint of Finland Ltd, told the Finnish News Agency (STT) that the project has already been started."

A rather respectable newspaper wrote about Lordi in their review of the ESC that they were looking like "giant lizards after a nuclear war" ("Riesen-Eidechsen nach einem Atomkrieg"). I find this description quite appropriate.

Other comments in the same review were made about Macedonia ("rhythmic gymnastics"), France ("unharmonic, cry-baby"), Croatia ("underground folk-dance peep-show"), Norway ("singing Raffaelo advertisement") and Germany ("too good, not striking enough, too intellectual").

Edit: The following posting shows that not everybody grasped the fine irony in the article I quoted. This may be due to the lack of context, but could be recognised already from the use of the word "intellectual" in connection with the ESC. I maintain that this is the best description of Lordi I've seen so far.

This is where they get the prize and sing their hallelujah again:

Here is a video with the song, not from the ESC but in better sound quality

For people in Central Europe who want to see them live, Lordi will perform at a Metal festival in Northern Bavaria (DE) in about two months ...
