A more fair Top Countries!

Post by BossaNova »

I was just wondering that Countries Top is a little unfair, since of course big countries like Germany will always have more notes than countries like Luxembourg.. So I thought that a more fair top would consider the countries' population and/or the notes produced for each country.

So I calculated how this top would be, using the data of EBT at 15:00 today, and the population data that I have in a book, probably not very updated.. this is the result: position; position on EBT top; population/1000; and number of notes entered/1000 inhabitants

1 (2) - Belgium - 64356 - 10200 - 6,31
2 (4) - Finland - 30051 - 5117 - 5,87
3 (3) - Netherlands - 34338 - 15600 - 2,20
4 (12) - Luxembourg - 859 - 412 - 2,08
5 (1) - Germany - 81140 - 81900 - 0,99
6 (8.) - Ireland - 2574 - 3600 - 0,72
7 (7) - Austria - 3266 - 8100 - 0,40
8 (5) - France - 15264 - 58300 - 0,26
9 (9) - Greece - 2474 - 10500 - 0,24
10 (11) - Portugal - 2072 - 10000 - 0,21
11 (6) - Italy - 5491 - 57200 - 0,10
12 (10) - Spain - 2468 - 39700 - 0,06

Look how Luxembourg went from last to third! I think this top is more fair, and the best way to see what's the best country to get some hits.. easy, go North! The last 6 countries are 6 "more Southern" ones (although is strange looking to Austria as a South country..)

Thanks for the statistics! I have been wondering the same and suspected that smaller countries would rank higher this way -- but I was disappointed to see that Belgium still beat Finland so I had to do some more calculation :).

Here is the number of notes put into circulation by each country (as of 1 Jan 2002) against the country of origin of the notes in EBT database as of 27th July at 6 CET.

The columns are: position; (unweighed position); country;notes in EBT db; millions of notes produced by 1Jan2002*; % of notes in EBT db.
1. - (4.) - (L) Finland - 28673 - 219 - 0,0131 %
2. - (2.) - (Z) Belgium - 49307 - 530 - 0,0093 %
3. - (3.) - (P) Netherlands - 33472 - 655 - 0,0051 %
4. - (1.) - (X) Germany - 83105 - 4342 - 0,0019 %
5. - (6.) - (N) Austria - 8748 - 520 - 0,0017 %
6. - (10.) - (T) Ireland - 2613 - 243 - 0,0011 %
7. - (5.) - (U) France - 21550 - 2570 - 0,0008 %
8. - (9.) - (Y) Greece 2914 - 581 - 0,0005 %
9. - (11.) - (M) Portugal - 2378 - 535 - 0,0004 %
10. - (7.) - (S) Italy - 7146 - 2380 - 0,0003 %
11. - (8.) - (V) Spain - 3545 - 1924 - 0,0002 %

* This is the number of notes printed, not the number of notes put into circulation, so it's not the absolute truth

Of course this is not strictly a country contest any more -- for example Finnish notes are being entered by all nationalites. But at least it shows that the odds that a note gets a hit are the highest with the Finnish notes. Or does it? I guess these stats should be compared with BossaNova's stats to get an answer?

it's a difficult answer, as I said I hesitated between using countries' population or number of notes produced..

probably the number of notes is the best option, because when using the population, we take it like everyone has the same number of notes, wich is note true.. for instance, although Belgium as a slitly bigger population then Portugal, Portugal produced more 5 million notes... the number of notes produced per country is not exactly proportional to the countries' population..

the only problem is how can we trust in the ECB data? where are the 46 million Luxembourg notes?

but I think we should use the number of notes entered in each country, for example, Portugal shouldn't get credits in the top because of the portuguese notes entered in France..etc.. and Luxembourg shouldn't be expelled just because they use only foreign notes..

PS: thanks for your reply jaker :P

Here's one more: Number of bills related to number of representatives of the respective country in the European Parliament. The figures are: number of members in EP - notes entered - notes per MEP

1 Belgium - 25 - 64676 - 2587
2 Finland - 16 - 30327 - 1895
3 Netherlands - 31 - 34569 - 1115
4 Germany - 99 - 81759 - 826
5 Austria - 21 - 5494 - 262
6 France - 87 - 15342 - 176
7 Ireland - 15 - 2574 - 172
8 Luxemburg 6 - 6 - 859 - 143
9 Greece - 25 - 2474 - 99
10 Portugal - 25 - 2083 - 83
11 Italy - 87 - 5494 - 63
12 Spain - 64 - 2477 - 39
13 UK - 87 - 160 - 2
14 Sweden - 22 - ?
15 Denmark - 16 - ?

This table is not based on headcount or economic performance but on political weight.

Not in fact. You see, when notes/km^2 above sea level, you divide the amount of the notes in _whole_ Holland by the amount land that is over sea lever in Holland.
If you divide with a smaller number (land over sea level) you get bigger numbers than if you divide by a big number (the whole land).

So Holland would surely be number one that way :)
But that would be cheating, as Dutch people use their notes also under water, not only above it ;)
A bit like dividing the population of EU by the area of France and saying EU has the biggest population density on the planet :D
