W-EBTM10 Malta: General information

If I understand it correctly, most buses don't drive after about 18.00 anymore.
I found only one route to Qawra (where I'm staying), where they drive until 22.00: that's the buses to/from Valetta.
If that's the only one, I'm thinking about renting a car: than I can track more places (I don't have to be back at 6).
(and I can also use it to get to the meeting points, together with the others staying in the same hotel).

Unfortunately, our bus service is quite centrally located and very few routes operate from other places than Valletta. Valletta is our main bus terminus and there are buses from each locality from there. Bugibba/Qawra, Sliema, Rabat, Marsaxlokk and some other places are served with some direct routes, which are not that frequent and finish early during the day.

Re renting a car, just be aware that we drive on the other side of the road.

I have some practical questions which might be very useful for other EBT'ers.

Electricity: The UK uses other electric sockets than mainland Europe, and since Malta has been a colony of the UK until 1964, I wonder if Malta uses the UK sockets or 'European' sockets. If Malta uses UK sockets, I (and the other meeting attendants) will have to bring/rent a socket adapter.

Using ATMs as a foreigner: I read in my travel guide that Maltese banks charge foreigners a fee when they use an ATM. However, my travel guide is from 2007, when Malta still used the Lira. Do banks still charge foreigners a fee when using an ATM or does Malta already comply with European regulation (i.e. withdrawing money at an ATM in another EU country should cost as much as withdrawing money in the EU country where the bank card has been issued. For example, in my case my bank cards are Dutch, and since withdrawing money at an ATM in the Netherlands costs me nothing, it should cost me nothing in Malta either)?

Talking about ATMs: what denominations do Maltese ATMs give? I have read somewhere that when Malta introduced the euro ATMs only had and , but that later on was added as well. And when I withdraw larger amounts (f.e. a few hundred euros), do I get paid as big as possible, or do I get some smaller denominations too?

Re ATM withdrawals, if your bank does not charge you if you are withdrawing money form a foreign country, it won't charge you when withdrawing from Malta. The charge you mentioned, should be for Maltese customers and not for foreigners. The charge is taken by the customer's bank and not the dispensing bank.

Re denominations, HSBC and APS banks give more notes for a withdrawal. BOV (Bank of Valletta) gives the majority in and only one in . For withdrawals of over EUR 250, BOV gives 's, but not all of them.

For a withdrawal of EUR 50, HSBC and APS Banks will give you 3x and 1x

Those who will be leaving from Valletta to the airport on Sunday, can take the bus if their luggage is not so big.

Small electronical devices with C-type plug (Europlug) should (in most cases) also be able to be used with G-type sockets. You just need to push the middle-pin cover with a pen.
Just try it.

i go to england from time to time , most of the bigger hotels there is 1 socket that accepts 3 types of plug
( for shavers only it says but it works for mi laptop , those plugs are also in the toilets of international and local trains )

Thank you very much. It's a valuable assistance for us. Malta's hit ratio will increase sharply for a short time, but why not.

Hopefully everything will go smooth. Lufthansa will be on strike next week and there is no guarantee that their pilots will have finished their strike by 5th of March...

I've a question: The Saturday tour to Gozo, will it be done by public bus transport?
