Congratulations! I just read the Volkskrant (NL), and I saw on the front page a header to page 14, where I read a piece about tracking euro bills, about this site! I don't know who send it, but I'm sure you get a lot more dutch people on this site.

It also said in the article everybody writes "eurobilltracker.com" on the bills. Does everybody do that now, or is it just a wrong piece in the article? Further it said every written bill will be destroyed by the ECB, so...

I'm not going to advertise for my site (i've got the same sort of site, and some of you know it), but I'm writing on every bill and my users has to do the same. I recently moved to the other side of Holland, and I heared about 3 bills of mine, which came there. I actually saw 1 of them! So, I discovered my own euro bill. It made me really happy :)

Well, I think you got more articles in other papers, so tell me about it.

Wouter: I'm not giving the address here on the forum I had some troubles with EuroBillTracker guy before, so I mailed it to you.

EuroBillTracker: No, your hits won't come from writing the address on it. It's not even your site address!! I've got a scan on my site (because everyone has to do the same so they can see how), so if you want the address I can mail it to you. If you agree writing the address in the forum, I do, and a lot of users come to my site too...

de-jo: You're Belgium I thought... Well, more Dutch people will come I think. The invasion... EuroBillTracker will see about that.

Mr Euro: I'm not a new Dutch friend here, I've been here for some time. Yeah, Dutch people are travelers, I once got a bill coming from germany and it was reported in Ireland. I've got a lot of hits at my own site, so I don't have to worry about hits! But the new guys, try it too here or on my site if you can find it :( 8O

Well, that was my long answer. I sure get one back :D

Sorry, DoubleYou, I'll stick to EBT. Your community is too small.

Hello,

here speaks another such site!

To the last count it were six such sites, see [...]. DoubleYou, are you one of them?

Actually, I also got some trouble in this forum with one of the moderators - not with the webmasters one has to say! - about posting the name of my site, see the track "Attention Thomas Hagemann" (http://forum.eurobilltracker.eu/viewtopic.php?t=226), but we should be realistic:

No site would like to close just because EBT has the most notes. Each site has its own merits (mine: its the only site handling also "foreign" coins, having some general info, news and: the best statistics and possibilities to search the database; others are using geographical information in tracking notes, ...), and we all should think about coexisting and cooperating instead.

For me, cooperating can only mean that euro note data are exchanged, since I'm interested in statistics (where appears when what kind of euro money) and the structure of the serial numbers, and no other site can give me this information, so I have to collect it myself.

I have no problems to provide "my" notes in return to other sites which concentrate on tracking and collecting "hits".

[BTW, hits are very unprobable (e.g. notes' life span is a few months to years at most for the smaller denominations) and it takes quite some time to have a genuine tripple or even higher order hit (which is necessary to really speak of "tracking" a note). Therefore, I find "artificial" hits much more interesting: you take a note, register it, give it to a friend and ask her to register it and to give it to a friend asking him to register it and giving it to a friend asking ... ... ... In that way you get a "sociogram" of a community. You might even be able to prove the "small world problem" by Milgram that says something like "it takes at most 7 hops to get from any person to any other person by way of acqaintances" :-) But following EBT's forum, I learned that EBT users are not tolerating such kind of hits; hits are even moderated. OK, that's EBT's choice - other sites have other choices ...]

So, how - if at all - to cooperate? In the moment I have no idea what kind of programming would be necessary to "synchronize" the data bases of the different sites regulary.

Any ideas?

Any volunteers to do the PHP-programming?

Have a nice stay at your favourite site, best regards from Bonn,
Thomas aka [...], registering euros since Januray 1, 2002

Thomas,

as much as you want to appear nice and everything I see absolutly no reason for you to use this communitie's forum to advertise your own site. I just don't see any rational reason for craco and I to allow it.

Sure, everyone can register at whatever site they want like TC said.

Sure, I think the great majority of people who visit this forum and then visit one of the "competiting" sites will stay here like wouter1 said because there are more bills/users/hits/real hits here but it's really just a matter of principles : why should you advertise on this site's forum ?

I also do not agree with your theory of false hits. Our hit list is very moderated and I have in fact confirmed via emails the most interesting hits so I have to respectfully disagree with you here.

A website such as this one can only thrive if there is a happy and increasing community of users which is what I've been working on for 8 months now. It has been a success so far and I intend to keep it this way : I'd like the hundreds of hours spent on this project to be worth my time. So, to repeat myself, I see no reason whatsoever to send users from this site (the number 1 site!) to other sites in whatever capacity. It doesn't make sense for the site and it doesn't even make sense for them. Time is precious and entering bills is fastidious, I'd rather this site increase its bill count as fast as possible.

Cooperation is extremely difficult on pet-projects like these : we all have lives besides the site and we do not benefit in any way from the project. As a consequence we work on this in our free time, out of pleasure.
Having to synchronize my work with other people's, develop extra protocols which will decrease the security of the whole site and basically become a front-end to a shared backend is not inticing enough.

I understand very well what you would benefit from getting access to EBT's database: more bills, more hits, more interest, more users. I am not sure what EBT would benefit from yours; in fact, like I wrote above; I know that I would have to pay a hefty cost just to do so. So, again, what rational is there for me to do that ?

My answer to this question is none

when i see the other site... i think "don't worry Philippe, i stay here  "(sorry Thomas yours is good but smaller)

Indeed, waste time to encode bills one per one... not for me... especially after the advanced form of EBT... and especially too if i am "obliged" to mark all the bills...

And if i stay on FME, is principally because it's a belgian site and i know some users ... and because i can register my bills faster by an other "way"...

Why i stay on EBT??? because all of that!!! and more...
nothing to say... just make hit ;o)
