Foreign Euro Bills from ATMs

Post by byrnefm »

Hi,

I've noticed here (in Ireland) that over the last month or so, a lot of ATMs here are now dispensing new foreign euro bills - eg:

€20 - Italy
€50 - Germany or Spain

The €5 and €10s are still produced here.
Has this occurred elsewhere? To me it looks like the Central Bank of Ireland finds it cheaper to source its euro notes from elsewhere in the eurozone rather than to print the notes themselves!

At any rate, it kind of throws off the amount of genuinely foreign bills which people bring with them into Ireland (or vice versa  ) on the statistics page.

Still, it's an interesting trend to see here - and one which couldn't have happened as easily before January :)

In th ebeginning of the year, the person who filled an atm in Delft (the one of the ABN-AMRO at the Burgwal) had mistaken himself, he put 20 euro notes in the 10 euro place, it didn't take long until the whole city knew about it, wich resulted in a 10 meter row before the atm, some people even took some beer with them in case they got thirsty :)
After some time of course, the atm was empty :(

greets,

This reminds me of one campaign by our local bank about 10 years ago or so. They wanted people to start using ATMs for withdrawing their cash, so they told there were some 500FIM notes placed in the ATM instead of the regular 100FIM notes, kind of a lottery. So if someone was lucky and tried to withdraw 300FIM, he might get two 100FIM notes and one 500FIM note instead.

Of course I milked my bank account empty with that automatic teller machine. All my summer job savings, four times over (until the bank clerks got suspicious when I wanted to deposit tons of money to my bank account..) I didn't get any 500FIM notes, though  Some people did, so it wasn't just a trick.

That campaign didn't last very long :D
